    Who cares?

The list isn’t even novel. At least with the "World’s richest people" list you read large figures and interesting names.

I look forward to the "Lowest sugar count on TRF list" too.

It seems absolutely incredible to me and quite insulting that the Queen tops the list of power women instead of Clare Balding.

For Clare to have to suffer the humiliation of being ranked below the Queen in this power list is totally unacceptable.

I just hope that someone has a word with the compilers of this power list of top women so that it can be adjusted.

I can’t believe they seriously believe that the Queen is more important than Clare.

The way things are going with Clare’s all-pervading dominance, it will be the Queen who makes the microphone announcements at Royal Ascot this year.

"May it please Miss Balding, one’s lords, ladies and gentlemen, one has just seen a marvellous race for the…"

What ‘power’ does the Queen and the Monarchy exert over anything these days?

The Royal Prerogative still exists, but in little more than name only as it’s simply an archaic procedural device, invariably invoked only after advice from parliament; which in a democracy is just as it should be of course

I suppose that if one wants to consider an intangible ‘power of deference’ that the Queen wields over the populace, then she does certainly seem to be all-powerful: epitomised by this ludicrous top-spot in this equally ludicrous poll, conducted by a programme that really should know better

    …it’s a funny old world :?

It’s a miracle in this egalitarian, dumbed-down world of the lowest common denominator that the Queen was even top, to be honest.

Normally it’s the likes of Lady GaGa, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and various X Factor "babes" who are seen as having the most power in the world by the vacuous standards of today.

The Queen has, of course, only devoted herself to public service most of her adult life and is continuing to do so long after many women of her age are in a nursing home.

Even the Pope’s "resigned" and I thought he really was supposed to have a calling for life, whether he liked it or not, no matter what his health was.

Depends what you mean by power Drone – she certainly has a great deal of influence on politicians – you only have to read most Prime Ministers memoirs to be aware of that.

With the experience she has there is certainly a been there, done that approach and she knows the mistakes which have happened before.

Quite frankly I would rather have someone like her as Head of State than a President Bliar, Brown, Cameron or most other Prime Ministers we have had.

However the entire poll is ridiculous and it just shows how low the BBC has stooped if this is considered a news story.

I thought the BBC plumbed the depths with the wall to wall coverage of the resignation of the Bishop Of Rome. Yes it is newsworthy but it did not justify the BBC News Channel covering it to the complete exclusion of other news stories for most of the day.

Finally does a program called "Woman’s Hour" have a place in the 21st Century?

Would agree that these things are absurd but it is just a part of the celebrity obssed culture we have now. On the Pope, if the BBC are going to have a big news story, the resignation of the Pope is pretty much as big as they come. Like it or not the Pope is one of the most influential people in the world.

When you read threads like this then definitely YES!

In any event, how the thread resides in a section of the forum entitled "Horse Racing" is beyond me.

I’ve nothing against the Queen, either as a person or as a titular head of state; she’s an admirable and dignified lady who’s carried out the duties thrust upon her with aplomb, and has barely put a foot wrong or muttered a word out of place during her long reign

I’m neither a Republican nor a Monarchist in that I don’t care, preferring to exercise the little grey cells with less irrelevant matters – such as horse racing or getting out and smelling the roses, though if the country really does feel the need to have a grandee overseeing all then I’d agree that Queen Elizabeth is preferable to President Blair or indeed President Any-Retired-Politician

Glaise your asses to the Quear old Deen :)

As for His Holiness in Rome, well I find him and all the associated mumbo-jumbo an irrelvance too but as has been mentioned, for a billion believers he and his church would seem to be the

    raison d’etre

, so I suppose the BBC and everyone else were duty-bound to offer saturation coverage

I’ve nothing against God, it’s just his fan clubs I can’t stand

I was under the impression that the omnipresent St. Clare was an atheist, or at least an agnostic, so her latest venture presenting the long-time quasi-religious ‘Good Morning Sunday’ on Radio 2 is curious. I do hope she didn’t follow a too-familiar path and ‘find god’ following her succesful battle with thyroid cancer :?

But your persistent personal comments about her on several threads have absolutely nothing to do with horse racing.

You don’t like her! Get over it!

Quite the reverse actually. I have frequently praised her professionalism on several different threads and have described her as easily the most impressive racing presenter on any channel.

She is head and shoulders above any other racing presenter for being informed, professional, able to think on her feet and fluent, as I have frequently mentioned.

I do like her. She has brought a welcome touch of gravitas to the Channel 4 coverage.

I don’t know about powerful women, but she must have the energy of ten men.

    Ubiquitous

could have been created just for Clare.

If any of the women on the list are truly powerful, they will not care one jot whether they are on the list. As that "wonderful woman" / "heartless despot" Margaret Thatcher once said: "If you have to tell anyone that you are powerful – you’re not".

All of the women who are not on the list, and have any sense, will not care either. The existence of the list indicates that some women have a long way to go realise that they have always been equal to men, but different, and that they can have power if they feel it that it is important enough for them to desire it. Fortunately, there are fewer arrogant women than there are arrogant men.

I suspect that Clare Balding only wants to do a good job for it’s own sake, not for any reason of appearing to exercise power.

A meaningless list if ever there was one. Even Delia Smith has appeared on the list and had me thinking how she could use her power to make the world a better place. I reckon that Delia could have kicked life back into the British Economy with a mass drop scone bakeathon and then done her bit towards easing tension in the Middle East by getting Leaders from Israel and Palestine to join her in making a lovely cheese souffle on the new concept show "Delia’s Give Cheese a Chance"

I am sure Clare has her own plate full enough and doesn’t see herself as a Scraggie Thatcher of the future. Clare’s biggest danger would appear to be over exposure and spreading herself too thinly in an effort to be a Jackie of all trades. Another Graham Norton in the making?

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
