Hello folks,
looking for any reccomendations for travel / stay to Ayr racecource for scottish grand national day.
We have left it late to book hotels and looks like most places in ayr are booked up.
Does anyone know of any towns in the vicinity to stay where we could get a local train to and from some accomodation and racecourse?
March 19, 2026 at 14:12 #1760436Just stay in glasgow and get the train from glasgow central out to ayr , its about an hour on the train and about a 25 minute walk from the station
Should find the hotels cheap enough in town
March 19, 2026 at 14:18 #1760437Ken, I’d imagine if Ayrs booked, the same will apply to the obvious shouts Troon and Prestwick. Troon worth a go, and Highgrove, and Marine very decent, as well as Priestland, which has a good rep
Train won’t take long from Paisley and Glasgow either, and Girvan worth considering too, sure it still connects by train

March 19, 2026 at 18:24 #1760466Try Largs , plenty of hotels and the seasons not started yet ( I live 6 miles off Largs ) plenty places to eat/drink , I reckon you’ll see plenty of Mullins horses again. Willie enjoys his days at Ayr

March 20, 2026 at 09:39 #1760529This might not be your thing but a couple year back we looked at staying at Craig Tara caravan park. We could rent a static caravan for 3 days for something like £190. We ended up not going in the end but its definitely a cheap alternative. Its only 4 miles form the course.
I had been on a family holiday years ago, the caravans are all good standard.

March 24, 2026 at 13:42 #1760847Ive went with a place in troon, handy for the train and reasonable.
looking forward to my first visit to ayr racecource
just need to land some tickets from somewhere now if I don’t get any badges gratis
March 24, 2026 at 17:12 #1760872The big disappointment with Ayr is that they no longer appear to use the viewing platform on top of the grandstand.
It was always packed out on National day with a great atmosphere. And the view of the course was up there with the best in British racing.
A real shame.
