Hello guys. I am an Australia and I have just finished high school. I was wondering if any of you could steer me in the right direction in terms of finding a job in regards to journalism. I love horse racing, and I would love the experience of watching british racing in depth and writing about it. I am preferably looking for a traineeship/cadetship for 12 months. Thanks lads.

Racing journalism is a pig of a business for those keen to get their foot in the door. Opportunities are scarce and those which do arise are hounded by hundreds of young aspirants.
Search the entire online landscape for racing websites that provide (or could provide) editorial content. Do not restrict your search to media outlets such as AAP Racing and Racenet, but also racing stables, tour companies, tipping sheets etc etc.
Offer to write articles for magazines for free. They need to fill up an 80-page book and will welcome a contributor who they don’t have to pay a cent for. The reward is a published article printed in your name that you can present to potential employers as evidence of your talents.
The important thing is you need to be innovative, entrepreneurial and pro-active in order to capture the eye of potential employers. Talk to people in the industry, send letters selling yourself to every single media-related company you can think of. Let the industry know of you and what you can offer to them. Remember, this is a huge networking business.
June 17, 2010 at 08:12 #301390Don’t you need to have gone broke several times, have a drinking problem and have slept in the streets to be a racing journo? You don’t have the necessary experience. Hey! I qualify.
June 18, 2010 at 19:24 #301801There’s a story in today’s Racing Post about Sydney’s third leading apprentice being denied a work permit because of European Community regulations, so it looks like you might have to find yourself a Britsh grandparent and get yourself a British passport.
edit. Apparently, the story is taken from racingandsports.com
