Has there ever been another horse with his profile?
4 runs as a 3yo. 2 where he ran like a drain. But 2 more when he won Derbies.
I hope he is OK after today. Not a good look when a Derby winner is almost pulled up with over 2 furlongs to go.
July 29, 2023 at 19:48 #1657096Michael Tabor was none too positive pre race commenting on the going. Maybe the Guineas and today were genuine going issues, both total flops.

July 29, 2023 at 20:10 #1657098Strange really he won the futurity on soft
Yet has been almost pulled up twice this season
July 29, 2023 at 20:34 #1657100Probably the ground- and it looks better from a stallion POV to more or less pull up when he isn’t travelling well than to attempt to put him in the race and get properly beaten into 4th or 5th.
As my brother used to say , “If you don’t try, you can’t fail”.
If it turns out he was actually sick or injured- my apologies to The Lads.
July 29, 2023 at 20:41 #1657101If it turns out there are no issues was he ridden to achieve the best possible placing.

July 29, 2023 at 20:42 #1657102I hope something does come to light because to my mind he was well beaten much too far out to blame it on the ground.
July 29, 2023 at 21:05 #1657103At the moment they can offer no explanation and that his “power disappeared” with Ryan pushing from half way out.

July 29, 2023 at 21:27 #1657104Having watched it again it looks like the jockey did give him a reasonably hard shove before throwing in the towel so I suppose he was probably right to stop riding.
Auguste Rodin’s dam, Rhododendron, placed 2nd the the 1000gns and Oaks, then bled in the Prix Diane. Her form thereafter was patchy fading to poor. She won the Prix de l’Opera at 3 (on soft, as it happens) and the Lockinge in her 4yo season then bombed in the Queen Anne on her next start (trainer could offer no explanation for the filly’s performance) and again the the Nassau, finishing last, similar no explanation. She travelled well in her next race till stumbled and eased, and then was tried in 3 more group 1s, travelling well but weakening quickly and finishing down the field on each occasion, then retired.
If Auguste Rodin is a bleeder or is tying up, they’ve got problems.
July 29, 2023 at 22:24 #1657107A big problem they have got is he does not look anywhere near good enough to win a 10 furlong Group 1.
July 29, 2023 at 22:49 #1657109He might get an easy one like the Tattersalls Gold Cup next spring, if the ground isn’t too soft.
July 29, 2023 at 23:08 #1657112The way he stopped looks to me like he bled. Obviously not something Coolmore would want to mention for their prize stallion prospect…though I’m sure people would line up to breed to him anyway.
July 29, 2023 at 23:08 #1657113That’s twice now: Colt has clearly got an ongoing issue – winning The Derby with him might just be the trainer’s greatest ever non-marketing spiel-related achievement.

That makes we want to wilt Wilts, and that sort of spirit would have been no good to Tommy and the STAND UP AND FIGHT TO THE END BRIGADE AND UNDYING SPIRIT EVIDENT in the 1914 campaigns, and certainly wouldn’t have won us the Great War.
Good Grief and Gor Blimey

If Auguste Rodin is a bleeder or is tying up, they’ve got problems. If his bad run is down to bleeding inherited from his dam, then it’s not going to go away. The English Derby was a hard fought, stylish looking, win from off the pace and the Irish Derby also a tough won battle. If he bled after both those races maybe his recovery time has not been long enough for him to perform to that level once more.
Like you said green they have a problem.
The likely solution being that he will not race again and be retired to stud.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 30, 2023 at 04:46 #1657126Horses bleed when they reach a certain threshold of breathing hard enough to burst the tiny blood vessels in the throat and nose. For many horses increasing aerobic fitness is enough to prevent bleeding without resorting to medication. But if a horse is genetically predisposed to having weaker capillaries their threshold for bleeding is lower and they may bleed even without other signs of respiratory distress/overexertion. If Auguste Rodin falls into this category giving him a longer recovery time won’t do much to help .
