Once again it’s Southwell Racecourse providing another fatality that is not jumping related.
This 14-year old jumped beautifully without hitting any fences, but came out of the bend with a swinging foreleg. Six fatalities already and only few of them jumping related. This racecourse still has huge ground issues, but they don’t seem to care at all. They stand at six fatalities so far this year and those are only the ones we know about.
May he rest in peace (clearly deserved a much better fate at this age!!!!!)
June 27, 2022 at 14:26 #1604439This horse had not run for well over a year and was fourteen years old. I saw the black screens and knew it wasn’t good, every meeting there is a fatality.
June 27, 2022 at 15:36 #1604442I think that it is the grades of the runners that are the problem. Plumpton, Fakenham have similar results. Also summer jumping is not good really.
June 27, 2022 at 16:09 #1604446Look at Plumpton’s back straight. 80% of the fatalities occur at the downhill obstacles. And they are not always jumping related. Those three tracks are a lot more lethal than Aintree or Cheltenham.
June 27, 2022 at 21:34 #1604480So sad for a 14yr old to be asked to run after such a long period of time & then to lose his life RIP Sockastar
June 28, 2022 at 10:25 #1604502It’s only recently that Plumpton’s fatality rate has increased – with last season being particularly bad. The course hasn’t changed and I don’t think the positioning of the fences has either so something else must be contributing. Hopefully they have some idea and are making appropriate changes this summer.
June 28, 2022 at 16:10 #1604529Terribly sad to read this Thread.
Isn’t it time the shutters came down for good on this dreadful course who seem oblivious to horse welfare.RIP Asockastar ⚘
He should have been enjoying retirement at his age.
Several other horses pulled up one with a cut on his leg.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 29, 2022 at 09:11 #1604621One thing I have noticed about Southwell is that it well used by some of the top trainer and the numbers are good. That really surprises me, the portable fences are a disgrace and the speed of the staff moving the wheelie jumps after the last race is appalling, all about the speed. Quite a few courses have the portable fences now, are fatalities as frequent at the others, say Worcester? Or is it just Southwell?
