    Excellent start for him

    Perfect jumping technique

No wasted energy at his obstacles

    economical, accurate and fast

After vega flopping yesterday looks like he has very little opposition and would be one of the bankers of the week If staying sound

He was pretty good, a little bit keen but I’ll chalk that down to freshness. The bare form isn’t amazing, but can only beat what is there, the 2nd is probably a decent handicapper but not at 2m, he needs further. Bit of a knock to Mister Policemans win, the runner up was lapped here. I’d like to see Marine Nationale do it against something decent before I’d be talking about certainties.

Sounds like both Paul and Willie are expecting a much better run from Mister Policeman tomorrow

Il have to see that to believe it

He needs to show he can actually jump and that he’s not a morning glory

I expect a lot of eyes will be on the Naas race as Mister Policeman and Blood Destiny vie for the position of Willie’s Arkle understudy, now that the main performer looks vulnerable and they are one bad Facile Vega run at the DRF away from being promoted to being the star – the Naas race having been won in previous years by Appreciate It and Blue Lord.

I’m more interested in a horse who runs in a beginners at Fairyhouse (previously won by Flame Bearer and Saint Sam) the next day, who I believe would have been in the Naas race had he not couped at the last on his first run over fences, also at Fairyhouse- in the race where Blue Lord won his beginners. It’s Hunter’s Yarn, who had matters well in hand when he got too tight to the last. Ok he only had Sa Fureur in opposition- but SF’s jockey was hard at it and Townend motionless, and the rest were completely cooked. It was an unfortunate fall- the horse isn’t stupid nor does he lack scope. Far from it, he was a big lanky beast stepping over hurdles last year. He’s got more muscle behind the saddle now and I think fences will make him.

I liked his attitude on his first try, he was a bit hollow backed to start but improved and attacked fences with a bit of zest and was quick enough through the air. He’s got the size, stride and power to be a player at Grade One.

Firm Footings is also entered on Saturday’s race, a gorgeous big chaser who I’m going to follow, but I think he’s gathering a mark for a step up in trip…he’s Monty’s brother!

Arkle Hunter’s Yarn 33-1 split win only and ew.

I still like Facile Vega. Mullins will have him in tip top form for Cheltenham you’d expect.
However Marine Nationale was extremely impressive the other week so I’m semi jumping ship whilst he even money I’m playing away

Mister Policeman stuffed. Jumps like a snooker table and looks like he wants another half mile, at least.

If there’s one thing that might beat Marine Nationale its that something clearly hasn’t gone right with him between winning the supreme and his fences debut. I believe they were trying to avoid the bad ground was the offical line given but he’s run on ground Timeform gave as heavy in the end on chase debut and the truth looks to lie in this wind op which was only revealed after the race, they aren’t required to declare them when racing in Ireland and wearing a tongue tie. If they’re worried about his breathing or something else physical then at the prices you have to have a slight concern if he’s in a battle he might not find much up that Cheltenham hill. Question is does he have so much talent that nothing he’ll face will make him battle?

Connections didn’t want to bottom him out over the Winter before peaking for the Arkle. Unless you’ve heard or read something somewhere Tinman im not concerned about anything wrong physically with him.

Its not recorded on his racing post profile yet but the trainer alluded to a wind op after he ran over fences, stuck a tongue tie on him too which I believe they generally do to help with their breathing, maybe its a minor thing but just strikes me as something very strange to do with a horse who was at the top of his division and on the surface had no obvious need for one.

Why is it odd? It’s called attention to detail.

Maybe its not odd but you’d think a horse who was the best 2M novice hurdler by some margin last season wouldn’t suddenly need wind surgery unless he’d developed a problem. If he was winning the Supreme like that with wind issues he’s some animal. And I can’t recall many horses being in that situation then reappearing not only with wind surgery but a tongue tie added.

I found an article about it after his win. It says “He had a little wind operation before he went out at the end of last season and we put a tongue strap on him today. We just thought it might improve him a bit.”

Certainly wouldn’t say it’s a great sign for his longevity..but time will tell

I’d agree Jack, I’m probably not too concerned about him this season because on raw ability he looks a good bit better than his likely opposition in the Arkle so they may not test out any frailties but its certainly something I’ll be baring in mind when he steps out in open company next season.

As long as his longevity lasts for at least 2 and a bit months that’s fine by me. lol
