If that oily little creep Archer can hang on to his peerage, why can’t the greatest-ever jockey have a knighthood ?

Lester won’t be around for ever :( – how can we get him the honour he so richly deserves ?

Jeffrey Archer does make me laugh – arch Billy Bulls**tter.

The biggest crooks are usually in power.

Piggott had an OBE and was stripped of it following his tax issues. There isn’t a chance in the world that it will be re-visited. Racing has honoured him as best it can – the "lesters" etc. – but that will have to be the height of it.

Nonetheless, fair point about Archer – how come he has kept his knighthood? It’s probably down to the labyrinthine rules of the honour system – thank god I live in a republic

    Knighthoods are meaningless anyway.

Sir Jimmy Saville, Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Elton John… and so on and so on.

    You get my drift.

Why should lester Piggot get a knighthood…I am more miffed he never won the BBC Sportsman of the Year which is amazing………The thing is to be knighted you have to be very good with a sword like Sir Anthony Hopkins (Zorro)and of course Lancelot was not only good with a blade he was humping the queen as well.

Mick Jagger got one but I have no idea why, when it should have gone to Keith Richards whos real name is Captain Jack Sparrow……without whom cruise holidays wouldn’t be safe today

I think Lester will manage fine without a Knighthood and would rather have a box of Cuban cigars…..what a silly but entertaining thread :) .

The answer is really quite simple – Jeffery Archer is Baron Archer of Weston-Super-Mare, which in the aristocratic pecking order is a few steps up from a Knight of the Realm. Only his peers, in the form of a successful censure vote by the House of Lords, can effectively deprive Baron Archer of his title. Ever since the Middle Ages, while a reigning monarch can bestow such a title, the only available means for a monarch to forcibly take such a title away from the recipient is by an act of treason and a resulting death sentence.

Baron Archer served time at Her Majesties Pleasure for perjury – something of a misdemeanour in the eyes of the House of Lords being that his lying was an attempt to cover up sexual discretions rather that relating to treasonable matters of national security.

Never did like Lester Piggott. A humourless, soulless robot rider. I often wondered if he even liked horses

    Nighthorse,
though Fister will undoubtedly disagree with me, I think many top jockeys don’t like horses much.

it’s already been said, archer has a life peerage and his crime was ‘just’ a legal misdemeanor whereas piggott was convicted of effectively stealing from the queen – he will never receive any award from the monarchy now and not so long ago would’ve been hung, drawn and quartered for such a crime

Like any other people Sean some do some don’t……….Never heard of Lester say he loved anything outside of cigars and money…….I can only speak for jump jockey’s mostly retired like Jonjo Mark Dwyer Coln Tinkler Ron Barry etc who were well known for there love of horses………..Ruby Walsh comes over as a man who really cares about the horses he rides.

To be honest if you don’t know a man personally there is no way of telling.
Most howver do become attached to certain horses as you would your better half, dog or your teddy bear depending on your age
