Asks the email from Ascot racecourse ahead of Saturday’s Shergar Cup.

I’m whatever horse(s) I bet on in each of the six races, if I have a bet at all on this card, that is.

My loyalty is to my wallet, a quality I suspect I share with virtually all of Britain’s other punters.

Why don’t we have a Mens team. Jockeys are supposed to be equal regardless of gender so why create an isolated Ladies team how out of touch is that.

The more I know the less I understand.

Do we think they had an in depth debate over the Ladies team silks colour, pink brilliant.

The more I know the less I understand.

I don’t see the pink silks as any sort of problem. Plenty of women appear to have been enjoying the Barbie film where it looks like lots of pink coloured dresses are on show.

Ian, when I saw the title on this thread, I thought you were jumping into the void left by Captain Robbo, and trying to drum up some enthusiasm for the big day!

No chance, Marlingford, and I will tell you why.

I actually attended this card 12 years ago.

Nice weather, but six impenetrable handicaps, many jockeys the merits of who I was unfamiliar with, and a Peaky Blinders wannabe crowd getting off their faces and paying no attention whatsoever to all the meaningless “team” updates over the tannoy.

I had some nice prawn tempura in sweet chilli sauce and after racing it was the 80s gig with Visage, Jimmy Somerville and Altered Images with Clare Grogan – still looking as cute as when I first set eyes on her in Gregory’s Girl – that made the day worthwhile!

I’m no Captain Robbo and never will be!

I don’t object to pink but the thought that probably went into it. Having looked this up it seems originally pink was for boys and blue for girls but this was changed as pink was deemed a softer colour.
What really annoys me is a Ladies/Girls team, why if the press try to enforce they should be regarded the same as male jockeys, this just isolates them granted they have been successful.

The more I know the less I understand.

I wouldn’t read too much into the choices of team RTB, and doubt there is intended to be an implication that women jockeys are different or inferior. The organisers have to divide their artificial teams by some method.

I suspect a women’s team has been chosen to showcase women’s ability, and would not be surprised if those that devised the team splits were hoping that they win.

    Standings for the 21 runnings.

    ROW 7
    Europe 4
    GB & I 4
    Ireland 3
    Girls 3

Like most people I don’t really care who wins.

The more I know the less I understand.

In the absence of the good Captain, there are two positives about Shergar Cup Day –

1 It’s NOT The Racing League

    hence

    2 It’s only one day a year

I agree with you entirely Ian. Certainly on points 1 and 2.
However , I hate this contrived , twee nonsense , of team racing , so I will neither be betting on it , or even watching it.
    Bah humbug :-( :-(
