I thought this was impressive today, the way he got up to win and snatched at his ground on the run in showed really good attitude from a novice, especially after nearly coming a cropper 2 out.Cracking ride from thornton.
December 7, 2008 at 02:49 #194985It was.
Fantastic to see too as i have seen him schooled, and have liked what i have seen, and he displayed a huge effort today and a superb attitude to his racing.
December 7, 2008 at 03:33 #195000Not sure who commentated but I heard them say that Thornton got him home, credit to the jockey but on the run in it seemed like the winner wanted it more than the second who to be fair wasn’t stopping in front, not often have I seen a horse with more guts and I wish all the ones I back would give as much effort.

Commentators were Barty on RUK /on-course Simon Holt on C4.
In my review of the race I made the comment that "Thornton out McCoyed McCoy" it was a very good ride from Thornton.
December 7, 2008 at 03:55 #195008I thought it was a very good ride by Choc.
Ride of the day had to go to Timmy Murphy on Witchita Lineman though. That horse loves Chepstow!
December 7, 2008 at 04:31 #195017and when he jumps a little better (and u trust king to get that sorted) he will be even more impressive. I loved everything about this horse….looks like he will be stepped up in distance and willbe more impressive for that. better right hadned too they feel
December 7, 2008 at 05:43 #195032Very good ride from a jockey who is under-rated in teh grand scheme of things. Not the most stylish and will never look as elegant as, say, Ruby, but ticks the important box – horses run for him.
December 7, 2008 at 09:42 #195066Backed him AP earlier in the day as thought he was just too good at his AP price for the asrkle and where it would appear connections do not fancy him for the race, as Grasshopper pointed out on the arkle thread there isnt much choice as to where to send him.
It was certainly an encouraging performance, but the one thing I didnt really like about him was his action, he wasnt running like he was 100% IMO, and having not seen the horse before I dont know if that is the way he normally runs, if not then he may have much improvemnent if this quirk can be ironed out for a big day meeting. If that is they way he usually runs, then he may just be a game finisher whom we will just have to hope doesnt run into one at chelters who leaves him standing.
December 7, 2008 at 17:18 #195126Think it’s the first time I’ve seen him and I really liked the look of him down at the start, lovely type, and I’m a sucker for a flashy chestnut. That neck should come in handy if he keeps sticking it out like that!
December 7, 2008 at 17:21 #195127Surely the call with Araldur is back to Warwick for the Kingmaker Novices – King likes the race and it has an alarming habit of throwing up Arkle winners – VPU and Flagship Uberalles (both won the Arkle as 5yos, like Araldur is looking to do)
December 7, 2008 at 17:33 #195130Loved the way Araldur won yesterday, really genuine big sort. Excellant time too.
But King has said he thinks the horse is best right-handed, on soft, over further, and probably won’t go for the Arkle. So although I thought of backing him (and the second) for the Arkle will not step in yet.
Free World is a stable companion of Tatenen (amongst other possibles) so may not go for the race either.Mark
Value Is EverythingDecember 7, 2008 at 18:35 #195155I was SO impressed by Araldur, I cannot remember the last time I saw a horse battle quite like that.
Coming into the straight he always looked 2nd best, but you could see he just was not going to give in. Looked a decent race but he will get further in time, surely?
Great ride…..but bloody gutsy horse!
Take a bow, Araldur

December 7, 2008 at 18:40 #195158I don’t think I have seen a more gutsy display from a novice in years. The horse just refused to crack. Choc Thornton must also be commended for his tenacity and will to win. Very taking performance by Alan King’s horse.

Even turning in I had a feeling Araldur would catch him. You could see he was giving it his all and stays well. Free World was travelling well without showing a lot for it.
It also helped that I had a few quid on the winner.
A good story. During the train journey, a friend and I were choosing our selections. I’m not too keen on ‘betting blind’ – I much prefer using ATR or RP online when studying the form.
My friend was flicking through The Sun newspaper and I noticed the horoscopes column. Here’s what mine read:
‘Luck highlights K names’
Screw it, I thought. If I’m betting blind, I’m gonna bet for fun. The only two races I looked at with interest were the Henry VII (Araldur) and the Tingle Creek (Tidal Bay, who I never backed).
My ‘K’ selections were:
12.50 King Of Castile 20/1 (4th)
13.25 King Jack 18/1 (4th)
15.05 King’s Revenge 10/1 (8th)
15.35 Kilbeggan Blade 7/1 (1st)The first two gave me a run for my money at decent odds (both £5 win), but here’s what happened. I decided to stick with my ‘K’ selection for the 15.05, King’s Revenge.
“I thought you really fancied Sunnyhillboy?” my friend asked.
“I did, but I’ll stick with the K’s for now, they’ve given me a run so far”.What happened? McCoy galvanised an effort from the horse to win by a neck.
Last race. Screw It, no luck with the K’s. I’m going for my initial selection, Nine De Sivola. The chances of any jockey winning three in a row are slim, anyway. What Happened? In typical McCoy fashion, Kilbeggan Blade was being pushed along form some way out, but got up to win by 3/4L, only for Nine De Sivola to come trotting past the post last after being pulled up and never travelling.
Failing to back a horse you fancied is one thing, but to see it get up and claim the spoils by such a small margin is even worse!
December 8, 2008 at 21:52 #195470I still remember (and I apologise in advance if Im wrong on anything as it is just by recollection) last season when Free world met Ashkazar, ashkazar turned the race into a bit of a slog and Free World who had looked to be travelling OK for the early stages was in trouble some way from home, I dont think Free World has any other options but to go for the Arkle, I dont think he’ll step up well. I do like him though but think that a sedate pace at 2 miles is probably what he needs to see him at his best.
December 8, 2008 at 22:00 #195474Impressed by the guts of this horse even if he has a rather ungainly gait (I believe he has had a fracture at some stage?). Thought the second had a very very hard time from McCoy – hope hes tough enough to survive it mentally.

What about the 2 mile handicap?
