It’s today’s date, but it’s also the name of a horse who had a significant impact on me getting into horse racing.

The first race I ever remember randomly watching was the 1974 Grand National (I tuned in, aged 11, halfway through while seeking sanctuary in the living room from my 7yo sister’s raucous birthday party) but I don’t remember sitting down and watching the ITV7 properly until Whitbread Day in 1975.

In the autumn I returned exhausted from a Saturday morning school cross country race, watched the Hennessy on Grandstand and couldn’t understand why the Whitbread winner was 14/1 in a seven-runner race.

It won and my fascination with betting began….

Having an early winner in our horse betting lives is often the hook! Interestingly in that Whitbread gold cup you posted neither of the first or second jockeys whipped their horses after or even going up to the last fence.

    Love seeing these historic races.

I never knew Crisp was still racing in 1975. Sure I read previously that he got injured and was retired the same year as his loss to Red Rum. But that was either completely wrong, or not the full story!

Crisp and Red Run met again at level weights in a Pattern Chase at Doncaster over 3m2f.

It was a match – Crisp comfortably got his revenge.

Great thread Ian, love the race links there.

April Seventh ran in the 1975 National, and eight-year-old me persuaded my mum to have the only bet of her life as that is her birthday. Brought down at first Becher’s.

Think he ran well in a King George too. The one Royal Marshall won ?

Richard Pitman seems to have forgotten about Crisp’s 74/75 comeback season which didn’t really get off the ground until his decent run in the Whitbread.

‘When Bobby Met Christy’ by Declan Colley, is the best racing book I’ve ever red; bitter-sweet.
