Will be accompanied by a heaving, sweaty scrum of journalists and photographers, led by Rishi Persad

Would prefer him to finish on Whitbread Day, winner or no winner. Deserves a big stage rather than a micky mouse meeting. Who knows he could even ride the Whitbread winner.

Surely the reason for the open ended retirement is wanting to go out with a bang!? It won’t be after a little race around the gaffs.

Perhaps if AP has an excellent Cheltenham and ends up top jockey over the Festival. Or if winning the Gold Cup retires there and then "I’ve run my last race"; ditto Grand National, Scottish National etc. If no big win, expect it will be on the last day of the season.

The Grand National would be a great time to do it. Win or lose there will be a huge crowd of jockeys in the weighing room and it’s a good time to ensure that everyone who is anyone in the game will be there. All the lads can congratulate him and say goodbye, the only downside I can see is it distracting somewhat from the winner but if AP is on board it will be the fairytale everyone would love to see.

Seems a natural venue to hang the boots up for me.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

That’s why I think Sandown would be perfect steve, the meetings big but not too big. AP would be the centre of attention without competition as he should be.

An added bonus would be no other jumps meeting in Britain on the day unlike National day, enabling every other jumps jockey to be there if they want.

Of course if he won the National it could be a different matter.

He doesn’t want to wake up one morning knowing it is his last day as a jockey, or even ride in a race knowing that it will be the last time he ever does so. I bet he isn’t even thinking about it in that way, and will get off a horse one day soon and say ‘that’s it’ and even surprise himself by doing so. And it will be at a litle gaff track somewhere. [watch him retire after winning the Gold Cup now!]

    Surely he’ll finish at Punchestown?

Will his last winner be Jezki in the Punchestown version of the Champion Hurdle?

Holywell in the Gold Cup!

There’s a rumour in the ether that the above event will trigger a retirement but not AP’s.

In a betting shop somewhere near Nottingham, in the aftermath of a Holywell victory, the words will be heard:-

"Well Gord, you’ve skinned me for ten grand yet again", to which the reply will come:-

"Yes William, but I can tell you it’s the last time I’ll ever be skinning you for ten grand because I’m hanging up my pencil and abdicating as The King Of Ante Post betting."

In the background Nathan Hughes faints and The Gingertipster desperately tries to stifle a cheer but fails and lets out a hoot of delight whilst picking up the stricken Nathan Hughes and using him as the cue in a Dennis Taylor style celebration. Meanwhile Steeplechasing is struggling to breath and marks his calendar as TAPK Day and promises to forever remember what he was doing at the moment the news broke, which, sadly for Joe, was crumpling up, and binning, an ante-post ticket with "Ryanair Rajdhani Express" written on it.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Will come from way off the pace, under a typical McCoy strong finish.
