They said the Mohamid Ali was great the way he absorbed all those blows from Forman.
February 20, 2012 at 19:26 #392666If he does I’d fancy Dougie Costello could takes over as JP’s jockey.
I like Dougie but really can’t see him taking over from AP
February 20, 2012 at 21:28 #392682He’s said he wants to go out at the very top; there must be a strong chance this will be his last season.
It’s tough for a jockey to retire, even when they know it’s their time.
Besides, AP is only 37. That’s still pretty young for a jockey.February 20, 2012 at 21:41 #39268737 isn’t young for a jump jockey. He has had plenty of nasty breaks but always recovered remarkably quickly. However as the body ages the recovery time will increase and usually you find one day they just realize it isn’t worth the risk anymore. Although he seemingly recovered on Friday instantly, the day he starts to think "next time I might not be so lucky" is the day to retire.

You are right in saying it’s tough for them to retire – it drove R Dunwoody very close to the edge of reason when injury forced him out.
I well remember J Francome quitting quite young after being ‘hung up’ at Cheltenham and taking that as ‘someone’s trying to tell me something’.
I suspect AP’s mind will now be veering in that direction.

Maybe I’m just used to the old jockeys who wash up on US shores
. Paddy Young, Carl Rafter, Ross Geraghty, William Dowling, Xavier Aizpuru, and Bernie Dalton are all around AP’s age or older, and some of them have kids who are now entering the Shetland pony racing ranks. - AuthorPosts
