Just like wives "break in" husbands a la Shakespeare.
In fact in Shakespeare’s
The Taming of the Shrew
(of which perhaps you’re thinking) it’s infamously the
husband
who "breaks in" the
wife
, by mental and physical torture. She thoroughly deserves what she gets, which is what makes the play something of a no-go area in contemporary England – though a production with which I was involved, set in the Middle East, had of course no such difficulties!
Having said which, the Bard’s plays usually demonstrate to a high degree how much more intelligent, practical and wise women are compared against their menfolk.
March 31, 2010 at 09:53 #286669Pinza and Andyod… you both sound like two gentlemen of Verona with much ado about nothing. It’s more like a comedy of errors reading your comments but I suppose as you like it I can only hope that alls well that ends well.
You nearly fooled me but I know your encoded messages were about a couple of today’s runners….Southwell: Be a Good Lady and Huckle Duckle (toil and trouble) as well as at Hereford: Time to Play. Thanks for the tips guys.
KApril 15, 2010 at 08:57 #290374You may be interested to know it’s not just racing that has whip issues – check out this USA showjumper hitting his horse 13 times. He’s currently under investigation by the FEI – but here’s the link to the You Tube film.

April 16, 2010 at 13:58 #290613Am sorry but i don’t really care who agree’s with me or not but i am all for a WHIP BAN, there is just something wrong and slightly off putting when you see a grown man (or woman)lifting their arm fully up and bringing the whip down on a horse that sometimes marks them….In which other sport would you get away with hitting an animal…I know everyone say’s the whip has changed and is air cushioned now but you are still hitting an animal. Win your race’s through your skill and not through beating an animal..please ..
April 16, 2010 at 19:39 #290678Nothing wrog with the British racing whip, if it is used correctly.
Ban jockeys longer for misuse.
Remember the Champion Hurdle Katchit won.
Katchit was a little terrier, so genuine and consistant. Kingy blated in to the stewards that day for banning Thornton and Osana’s jockey. It’s taken a long time for Osana to get back to his best. Katchit has never done so, hasn’t looked the same horse. May be that run did effect him. after all.
Realise that is a reason to ban the whip as well as banning jockeys for longer. Wonder if there’s a case to withold money from connections, may be then there will be incentive for trainers and owners to want jockeys to keep within the rules.
Don’t agree with this "he wouldn’t have won without all the "hits" stuff. The horse will go just as fast for 4 strokes as he will 5 etc.
Do think the whip is needed, otherwise temperament would mean so many horses held up to put their head in front on the line. A lot of horses don’t want to lead and need to be "encouraged" to do so. Racing will be totally different without a whip.
