Jeremy,
It’s not common knowledge, but the reason the KGB changed from ladders to umbrellas was because of the high numbers of agents defecting. They would often put their ladder up against the wall and just hop over.
The umbrella, although as you say, discrete and easier to handle, is not as practical and as a well made aluminium extending ladder. The fact that it can extend, allows the agent to do his deed at a much greater distance from the unfortunate victim and therefore in many cases achieve his objective unnoticed by the general public going about their daily business.
The Bulgarians were very quick to pick up on this, in fact they didn’t entirely drop the ladder in preference to the umbrella and have proved to be effective with both.
They have since developed a 20 foot telescopic ladder that can be carried in a fountain pen. I’ve been told that it’s still in the development stage, but does work with great efficiency judging by the number of dead mice seen being incinerated.
You would be well advised to treat with caution anybody who makes a sudden move for a fountain pen, it’s only a matter of time before it inadvertently falls into the hands of a misguided terrorist.
