The ayr commentary is a must for anyone who wants a laugh. slapstick at its best.
“and its the one in front leading”- priceless
Shame he didn’t call a photo at the end to cap it off
January 8, 2025 at 13:50 #1717703There will be northern-based commentators being turned down for work so that Tommo can get a gig like yesterday.
January 8, 2025 at 14:48 #1717706Just listened to this for the first time and know Tommo is prone to making mistakes but this sounds like there’s something more to this. Can understand him getting names mixed up but he’s actually lost and struggling for words. What was the rest of the commentary like?
January 8, 2025 at 18:35 #1717728January 8, 2025 at 21:15 #1717734Derek is an excellent presenter and all round nice guy, but he’s never been a good commentator and the last few years have been embarrassingly poor.
The vast majority of his commentaries use the same stock phrases –
“Let’s see what’s going to happen”
“This is where it gets interesting”
“Wow, what a finish”
“Photo!”
“That’s one for the judge”It doesn’t reflect well on the industry that no one has had the courage to “have a word” with the Big Fella before it got to this sorry stage.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
February 10, 2025 at 19:21 #1720298Derek has been on duty at Wolverhampton tonight. I am sorry to say it but he has been consistently terrible. Every race he has told us “This is going to be close!”
He also seems preoccupied by Luke Morris being on 499 winners at the track and is allowing it to influence his commentary.
February 10, 2025 at 19:54 #1720302And in the 7.30 he managed to not notice that a horse had collapsed on the track, which eventually caused the race to halted and declared void.
The horse’s collapse could just about be seen on screen. But a commentator who uses binoculars would easily have seen it live and been able to alert punters to the possibility of a void race straightaway.
On a more positive note, at least the procedure for stopping the race worked well and all the horses were safely pulled up before they reached the stricken horse.
February 10, 2025 at 20:04 #1720304I don’t think Thommo is alone in not using binoculars any longer. A lot of commentators these days sound like they go by the televised pictures instead of using their own eyes.
February 11, 2025 at 16:34 #1720359What has to happen for those giving him these charity gigs to finally stop? Maybe he’ll call Red Rum the winner of the 8.45 at Chelmsford tomorrow and that’ll still do.
February 11, 2025 at 16:44 #1720364” A lot of commentators these days sound like they go by the televised pictures instead of using their own eyes.”
Glad: A ITV commentator was shown live, behind two screens on set, doing the honours from another track. Its normal these days.February 21, 2025 at 18:52 #17209946.45 at Southwell tonight. Derek said the leader was “Being challenged on the stands side by the horse called Brinton”.
It was not likely to be a greyhound, was it?
May 19, 2025 at 10:27 #1730869Finally, at last!

Hopefully it will be at Wolverhampton so I won’t have to hear it.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
May 19, 2025 at 11:04 #1730872I might be having an afternoon at Wolverhampton next month. I hope Derek will be on commentary duty now!
He is not a good commentator but otherwise I think he is likeable and I wish him well.
May 19, 2025 at 11:45 #1730877Get him on ITV the bloke actually has some personality.
The more I know the less I understand.
May 19, 2025 at 12:56 #1730884Ironic Tommo says he’s only hanging up his bioculars, given that it’s common knowledge he’s never taken binoculars when commentating, as anyone who’s heard his commentary when the pictures have gone down in the past would know.
The title of his autobiography – “Too Busy To Die” must have been one of the worst anyone could think of.May 19, 2025 at 14:47 #1730890Yeats, that would just have been a tongue in cheek reference to his Cancer diagnosis. Whatever your thoughts on his commentary are, Tommo has brought colour to Racing and I wish him well whatever he does in the future. If you don’t like him, don’t watch.
May 19, 2025 at 15:30 #1730891A horse owned by Tommo just won at 66-1 at Redcar. As the filly’s trainer, Tina Jackson, said on RTV, “He won’t shut up now!”
Hope he had a few quid on.
