I think that understates how good Blake is Ian. In my view he’s very much at the top of the tree in terms of current racing journalists.

But not disagreeing on your point that the BHA ought to be able to field plenty of capable and articulate people to champion the sport. Their lack of leadership is woeful, if entirely unsurprising.

Has anyone actually seen or heard from Julie Harrington this week?

“In my view he’s very much at the top of the tree in terms of current racing journalists.”

I’d apply the same remark to the current (not that those back in the day were any smarter) crop of racing journalists too, then, tbh.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Blake is a bright bloke, able to think on his feet, and articulate with it.

But the racing industry generally isn’t exactly the Brains Trust and that’s why a bloke like him stands out.

If the BHA started actually recruiting university graduates on intellectual merit, instead of which school they went to, or whose family they come from, you’d soon see numerous Blakes fighting the game’s corner.

I rather fear most university graduates will be on the side of the animal rights crowd, ID. :-(

I’ve no stats with which to dispute your fear, CAS, so I won’t.

I guess you could be right.

I doubt it. Undergraduates perhaps. My colleagues are all graduates and are either ambivalent or looking forward to the race. Not to say some don’t have concerns about horse welfare but most of us share some of those too. I have the misfortune to know many extreme vegan types and, aside from the very young, they generally aren’t the best educated (apart, of course, for their “own research” on YouTube). Very much the same demographic as the anti-vax, chem-trail, 5g etc conspiracy theorists.

You give me hope for the future, Tonge.

Balanced views are invariably the way forward, whatever the generation.

I’m not so confident Ian. Seem to be more of these nutters than ever before. They were always around of course but some are even involved in government now. That they have latched onto horse racing is a serious concern.

Todays bunch of nutters don’t really need to bother demonstrating, or even turning up at Aintree. Their ‘protest’ has already garnered widespread publicity and persuaded the authorities to spend vast amounts of cash on extra security.

    This for example:

You’re right about the publicity ap but security for the race is already massive, consistent with an event that is already recognised as a potential target for far more professional terrorist groups. I doubt that the operation needed to be stepped up to deal with animal rights protests (regardless of what the Telegraph says). If it did then I’d suggest that it was inadequate anyway.
