I’m off to Haydock on Saturday so I had a quick scan of the early cards & I’m came across this:
Champion Hurdle Trial featuring ‘Truly Magic’ a horse rated 45 on the flat & has never raced further than 10f.
Is that unusual?
January 18, 2011 at 20:55 #336609Being a bit optimistic with her I would think. Perhaps she has been showing something at home that we are unaware of, or perhaps the connections are hoping that the race cuts up badly and she could pick up some soft place money.
She was incidentally once rated as high as 63 on the flat when trained by Dunlop junior (she may well be on a decent mark for the flat).January 18, 2011 at 21:09 #336612Being a bit optimistic with her I would think. January 19, 2011 at 12:08 #336682All sorts of possibilities to this entry, made all the more intriguing by the fact that trainer in question, the Melton Mowbray-based Peter Brookshaw, has been sending out horses under his name for only the last few weeks (landing a Polytrack contest with his first starter).
An early statement of intent from Brookshaw, then? Or shrewd placement to find a race that could yet cut up enough for a likely heavily beaten last place (of three or four runners) to land some prizemoney? Or just a nice day out / giggle? Or something else again?
Answers on a postcard…

January 19, 2011 at 12:11 #336684Better still, you’ll be at Haddock, Neil will probably be at Haddock, and I might be at Haddock as well if not required at Larkhill. Let’s all go and ask him.

January 19, 2011 at 16:28 #336727She has plenty of other entries this weekend which seem more suitable novice and maiden races.
However the prizemoney for the Champion Hurdle trial goes down to 670 pounds for 6th and given that there were only 8 entries there may be a chance of her recouping her paltry purchase price (she only cost them 700 guineas last November) in one hit if she can complete.
January 19, 2011 at 16:29 #336728Meant to say Juvenile and maiden races…
January 19, 2011 at 17:22 #336732Would be a fair chance of 6 runners or less I would imagine as Ruthenoise is surely only entered as a potential pacemaker were Soldatino be re-routed from his likely starting point at Ascot.
Think Afsoun did the same for Punjabi in the race a couple of years’ ago.Anyone know the background of young Brookshaw,is he related to Steve the trainer of Lord Gyllene by any chance?
Already he looks a better trainer than young Dunlop based on Gearbox’s win, maybe in time he’ll get the best out of Truly Magic also.
January 21, 2011 at 10:29 #336977Truly Magic declared for the juvenile hurdle at Ascot, not at Haydock, so that’s a £250 entry fee wasted.
And that despite the fact that the Haydock trial has only attracted four runners by the 10:00 deadline, and has been re-opened for a further 30 minutes, so prize money was guaranteed for any extra runner.

January 21, 2011 at 16:18 #337035And Ruthenoise was declared, just goes to show what I know!
January 22, 2011 at 08:01 #337153Looks like Truly Magic’s connections are one step ahead, £250 entry fee returned and a run at Ascot
January 29, 2011 at 15:41 #338227Curiouser and curiouser …
Having missed all those races for which she was entered two weeks ago, she’s now got two more chances this week (Ludlow Monday, Catterick Friday), BUT,
She has moved to a new trainer!
Now in the care of Liam Corcoran.

Hate to say it, but maybe the owner is checking out all the options before hot footing it to the glue factory.
