Drone and Pompete,
I think that I have made a mistake, if Irish racing is included. I certainly haven’t taken any account of it since I’ve been posting the results and must confess that I didn’t previously follow the thread in detail, trusting that Seagull was meticulous in his updating of it. I have been taking the results from the RP ‘Results At A Glance’ page which does not show results from Irish racing.
If I’m wrong, it doesn’t matter. It can easily be put right. I need to look back through the full results for last week.
edit:
I have read back through the thread and I can confirm that Irish racing is definitely included and also that bets continue until the bank is exhausted(£2,500 + accumulated winnings) or until December 31st, 2008.September 1, 2008 at 08:44 #178806Sunday 31 August

Drone,
Interesting article about averages, proving the point that the average isn’t always representative of a set of values. Michael Owen and I have an average weekly income of £60,000.
Pompete,
I’ll have to look again at those Saturday results- I seem to have found an extra race, possibly counting the 2.25 Newton Abbot joint favs. On the two races that started at 2.35, using this system, can it be possible to bet on two races that start at the same time? Surely every bet depends on the outcome of the previous one and cannot be made until that outcome is decided.
Edit: Pompete, you are correct. I have included the 2.25 Newton Abbot as the 6th loser. The 9th fav won at 9/4, giving a profit of £1,604. It still leaves the conundrum of two races at 2.35.[/color:rlq1211f]September 1, 2008 at 08:59 #178808Interesting article about averages, proving the point that the average isn’t always representative of a set of values. Mean, Median, Mode: compare and contrast
September 1, 2008 at 10:16 #178821I phoned Mark yesterday to offer condolenses after seeing the results posted by Artemis for Saturdays racing.
Mark said the 2-25 Newton Abbot race he left alone as there was from the Corals show joint favs he said he wrote slips out ready for both joint favs should one become clear favourite but as the market could not split them he left that race alone.
He said the 240 Ripon went off before the 2 35 at Sandown.
He said he had
1 loser @ dundalk
1 @kilarney
2 @ sandown
3 @ ripon
0 @ newton abbot
1 @ ChesterThe first sole fav was indeed the 2nd race @ Killarney which would have been his 9th bet and as that won at a good price he collected a cheque as there was not enough in the till to pay him.
On the ammended method I devised I avoided Irish racing but Mark has always included it. He thinks the Irish have a better strike rate with favs than English racing does but I dont think he has any figures to back that theory up.
September 1, 2008 at 11:18 #178830Artemis, on Saturday there was a three minute gap between the two races with the first race going off at Dundalk (5f) so plenty of time to play both races and I would be happy to include it in the results.
However, as you’ve highlighted this is a potential area where as a paper exercise errors may occur in the recording of results. A good example of this was yesterday with Killarney & Newton Abbot clashing despite a 5 min difference in the official off-times.
September 1, 2008 at 11:46 #178834Drone,
In a previous life, I got the job(by default) of teaching statistics to classes of business studies students at ONC level. My main subjects were finance and economics, but I was very happy to do it, being very interested in probability and chance. I learned more than most of the students, who will have forgotten their lessons but remember that I advised them to back Maori Venture at 33/1 for the National.
Mean, median, mode: standard deviation and so on……thought they might help me to beat this game…….they didn’t. But very interesting, nevertheless

September 4, 2008 at 10:41 #179332Last words on the subject of my son as he is leaving hospital today.
Thanks for all the messages of support.I never realised how many young people face life threatening brain injuries and illnesses until a few weeks ago.
The 21 year old boy who suffered one blow to his head is still on a life support machine and in the last few days a 23 year old lady went to hospital complaining of a head ache. She died the day after at Hurtswood Park after suffering a burst cyst on her brain.
