I have a confession to make – I have been to an all weather meeting and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
I was very pleasantly surprised.
I have to admit the only reason I went was as part of my ongoing quest to visit every UK racecourse at least once every calendar year and I only needed Wolverhampton for the full set of AW tracks in 2009 and I thought why not get it over with before Cheltenham?
The standard of racing was very good for an AW card, a listed race and a brace of class two handicaps – including the Lincoln trial.
There was a reasonable crowd and the atmosphere was good, and with 35 minutes between races it made writing the reports so much easier.

There were even 13 layers there – although there were still some very odd betting patterns.
Plus the icing on the cake was to be there to see Salute’s win, shame I didn’t back him though.
So well done to Wolverhampton – if there were more all weather meetings like that one I would definitely go more often and without complaint.
Nonetheless I still cannot wait until 07:00 Tuesday morning when I point the car in the direction of Cheltenham.

I was surprised by the numbers still around for the last race – I reckon it makes a big difference to crowd numbers there that Wolves were playing away and not on TV.
There also seemed to be plenty of punters cheering home Salute – where I was watching on the main stand, I certainly wasn’t the only one shouting!
I like Wolves best of the AW tracks – I feel that having the track so close to the punters, unlike Kempton and Lingfield, is a big factor in the atmosphere when they get a decent crowd like yesterday.
March 8, 2009 at 14:26 #214319Fully agree with you on all counts AP, especially with the crowds, I really like teh Saturday evening atmosphere – the key point is getting a good crowd – conversely there is nothing more depressing than a wet Monday afternoon at Wolves.
Salute was certainly very popular – one of the stag groups was standing near me and I think, from the volume, they backed Salute to a man.
Also it was good to meet you, albeit briefly.

Wolves is the best of the AW courses in the country.
Food in the Grandstand bar is very well priced and is very tasty, The Cheeseburger and Chips is a nice meal.
10m from the Bus Station and only a short walk from the Bus stop to the entrance.
The quality of racing may not be brilliant but as i have pointed out a few times if you want a cheap day out at a racecourse where you can move at your own pace and have the virtual run of the place then Wolves is ideal.

March 9, 2009 at 02:01 #214481Haven’t been for a few years (used to be my local track), but Saturday nights always had a real "dog-track" atmosphere. Good fun but hard to find winners.
March 10, 2009 at 15:10 #214861Hi gang

i live in Birmingham, i think Wolves (AW) is very acceptable. i must get along there more often. The form works out well, no real hard luck stories because the races seem to pan out okay. Plus you cannot beat seeing the horse in the flesh and absorbing the vibes. Winning money is definitely within reach

cya there!
