I’ll try Ask Paddington ew in the big race.
October 15, 2022 at 20:55 #1618650Agitare another Irish horse (now in Keri Brion’s barn) who seems to benefit from the softer ground in the flat stakes.
October 15, 2022 at 21:44 #1618672I want to see the Shark interviewed on American telly
October 15, 2022 at 21:47 #1618673It was in the description. Said was previously with John Hanlon in Ireland. That’s what confused me.
October 15, 2022 at 21:48 #1618674Far Hills is really pretty, and a nice autumn day for it too (lashing it down here).
October 15, 2022 at 21:52 #1618675Hewick cruises to victory! I know they’re pointing to Cheltenham next year but would love to see them return sometime, he likes the hurdles and the 3-mile Iroquois in May would be ideal for him…

They did a brief interview before the race, would love to hear him now though

That’s the best thing about jumps racing in the US. Spring and fall in the mid-Atlantic states has perfect weather for it.
October 15, 2022 at 22:06 #1618676I hope Danny Mullins is good at sleeping on planes. He has four rides at Cork tomorrow starting at lunchtime.

There’s the writeup of the post race interview
October 16, 2022 at 11:38 #1618747I saw a better USA take on a “Grand National” in “National Velvet” with Elizabeth Taylor.
But Hewick showed he can win a 2m5f fixed brush hurdle as well as a 3m5f Chase round Sandown and he remains a horse on the up.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 17, 2022 at 01:22 #1618840Good news: A talented high-profile Irish horse with a Cinderella story wins America’s biggest hurdle race!
Bad news: Lukewarm Twitter takes about how terrible American jumps racing is for the next 6 months till Cheltenham.

There is another, slightly more suitable Grand National at Butler, Md – a 3m2f timber race held the third Saturday of April – that gets called the Maryland Grand National to differentiate it from the Far Hills race. Unfortunately the $30k purse of the Maryland race won’t be attracting foreign interest anytime soon
October 17, 2022 at 07:48 #1618852I never said it was “terrible” – I was merely giving it context from my own frames of reference!
I enjoyed watching it!
I think I’ve seen the one at Maryland and recall the timber obstacles.
It was good, but no Jumps race “staged” on American soil will ever top this: https://youtu.be/SL8VcjlnXFI

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 17, 2022 at 13:46 #1618893Shark was gushing in his praise of the event, the ground, the crowds – everything. Can only see more horses from these shores giving it a spin in future. Personally i wish we could see more international runners at Cheltenham and throughout the National Hunt season. We’re definitely the poor relation in comparison to the flat.
October 17, 2022 at 18:25 #1618939The standard does seem to be modest enough, wonder why more British trainers don’t take their chances like Elliot does. On the same drift, McTigue landed a €70k first prize for a juvenile hurdle at Auteuil yesterday fro Emmet Mullins; with such good prize-money, must be worth more trainers having a shot
October 17, 2022 at 18:35 #1618944Well done to connections for winning a big pot but I think I could have jumped those “fences”!

The deciding factor there is purse money. It costs thousands to ship horses across the Atlantic, and there’s always the risk of the horse not adapting to the different fences and conditions in the new environs. Irish horsemen go to the US because the purses for the level of racing are high enough to be worth it. Only the very highest level of racing in the UK and Ireland are the purses better and quite frankly we rarely see horses of that quality emerge from these shores anymore.
