I think winning four Irish Hennessy’s, a Martell Cup, King George (from a three-time Gold Cup winner), a Punchestown Gold Cup and an RSA chase entitles Florida Pearl to not only be remembered as top class, but as one of the best chasers Ireland has produced in recent times.
I don’t think that’s even debatable.
Fair comment maybe I was a tad hard on him and I won quite a few bob on him over the years although I always thought his potential outweighed his record….no Gold Cups..ignore his Down Ryal form and later Cheltenham runs and he looks a lot better.
March 29, 2010 at 14:34 #286283There is always an exception that proves the rule and Florida Pearl is that one!! But there are plenty that haven’t turned out to be as good as expected!!
Monsignor
Joe Cullen
Liberman
Missed That
Cousin Vinnyall became disappointing IMO
I wait to be convinced otherwise about Cue Card
March 30, 2010 at 08:33 #286413Bit harsh on Missed That, imo.
Useful novice chaser, and beginning to show some of his undoubted potential, when sadly taken from us.
March 30, 2010 at 15:03 #286514Have to agree with CS about Cheltenham bumper winners!!
It has been a long time since one of them turned out to be top class either over hurdles or fences!!But I am sure somebody will tell me otherwise!!
Florida Pearl was the only that turned out to be "top class" and the term "top class" in respect of FP has to be debatable
Dato Star was a Cheltenham Bumper winner who was out of the top-drawer when it came to 2-mile hurdles (albeit he was dependent on Soft ground).
And there’s no debate whatsoever about Florida Pearl being top-class. A hatful of Irish Hennessy’s and a King George are testament to that.
March 31, 2010 at 20:53 #286802Was going to make the same comment on Monsignor… only injury stopped him from proving to all he was top class
Have just re-watched the Bumper and am more convinced now than I was on the day that Cue Card is class. Absolutely hacked round, won going away and still showed hints of greeness (either that or he’s a bit of a nutter )
12/1 seems fairish and the only reason for not having a good go at it, is the niggling doubt he may want further & the Supreme not being the target
March 31, 2010 at 21:21 #286808I
know people will say it doesn’t matter he’s a professional and all the rest of it, but i wouldn’t see Nicholls as the ideal candidate to prepare a successor to Kauto Star for a Gold Cup race
April 4, 2010 at 18:27 #287529RSA CHASE 2011 FOR BILL winning pointer 8 out of 9 over bumpers, points, hurdles, the further she goes the better she looks. Very impressive today, she looked the winner from a long way out.
April 5, 2010 at 10:52 #287630Of all Ireland’s Gold Cup 2011 hopes, the one with probably the most ability is the most frustrating. Zaarito is the most talented chaser we have in the country, bar Captain Cee Bee imo.

Hard not to be impressed by Big Buck’s again when he won at Aintree but I’m not convinced he’s the unbeatable animal people say he is.
It’s not so much him but the lack of decent opposition.
Zaynar just doesn’t do it for me but Peddlers Cross is a whole different ball game. If you had asked Donal McCain 2 months before Cheltenham if he would run I think you’d have got a near definite no from him.
This horse just doesn’t seem to stop improving and by this time next year the 14/1 about him could look damn silly so I had myself some of that.

I too have been very impressed by Peddlars Cross but I did read somehere that the plan is to go novice chasing next season, which also seems to be the plan the Irish mare For Bill. For my money they are the two outstanding novice hurdlers of this season, both would be still unbeaten had For Bill not been asked to put her record on the line over a sharp two miles on quicker going than she’d ever encountered before when going down to an enterprisingly ridden Morning Supreme. She reversed the form with MS in no uncertain terms on her latest outing.
I’d love to see these two take on Quevega over 2m4f before they go chasing
April 11, 2010 at 10:47 #289574Some of these so called experts rattling on about Peddlars Cross running in next years Champion hurdle!!He"s No 2 miler,i see him as the biggest threat to next years RSA winner
Tell Massini
,both look natural 3m chasers to my untrained eye!
April 11, 2010 at 10:48 #289575Hope Pedlar’s goes hurdling next season. Personally I think he’d be a serious Champion Hurdle horse.

"So called expert"!!
April 11, 2010 at 11:06 #289584Come again!?
April 11, 2010 at 11:07 #289585Solwhit for the World Hurdle. This is the only horse in training that will be able to serve it up to Big Buck’s over three miles.
Any Currency for the 2011 National together with Synchronised who will almost certainly be running off his correct mark if Denman goes for it.
Carruthers e/w for the King George.
