Currently trying to collate the racing records of some of the better known NH horses that were around at the time I became interested in the sport. It isn’t for a book.
The stumbling block I have is with NH Flat races/bumpers as these were included in the Flat annuals which I don’t have. Obviously, I am not particularly keen on buying all the annuals just to look up a small number of records.
I have checked Keylocks and these horses might well fall within this bracket:-
Dondieu
Arctic Bow
Ballywilliam Boy
Colebridge
Denys Adventure
Garrynagree
Glencaraig Lady
Good Review
Grey Sombrero
Helmsman
Killiney
Leap Frog
Sea Brief
Young Ash Leaf? Some great names of the past.
If anyone has the annuals (67-71?) and doesn’t mind having a scan please let me know.
Many thanks

Just to clarify, are you asking about bumper races run in Ireland?
Because I didn’t think there were NH flat races run over here in the years you mention. Not sure when they were reintroduced, but my feeling is that it was late 70’s or early 80’s.

Yes, I am pretty sure that all the above (with the possible exception of Young Ash Leaf) won one or two Irish bumpers. It was very rare to win three.
Bumpers started much later over here. Just for the sake of accuracy I will try and dig out my own (buried) records.
September 12, 2014 at 14:00 #490096I’ve just had a look the Chasers and Hurdlers in my library and the first one to mention NH flat races in the list of abbreviations at the front, is 1978/79.
Sorry, can’t help with Irish bumper form.

No problem.
This really is a labour of love. It seems I was lucky enough to develop an interest in what was a vintage period. You can literally drool over the fields for major handicaps like the Benson & Hedges, Schweppes and particularly the Whitbread. All races where genuine championship horses were not afraid to take on all comers and in some cases still emerge on top.
Horses of all standards were running regularly on ground that was often given as firm or even hard. Add in the stiffer fences and you wonder if we just had a tougher breed in those days.
It seems a decent horse could turn up almost anywhere. It is particularly depressing to see the comparison of Midlands tracks between then and now. The likes of Wolverhampton, Worcester, Nottingham and Stratford all had races framed to attract good horses but now they are little more than gaff tracks just making up the numbers.
September 12, 2014 at 16:39 #490098Just need to check what you need. Reading the 1970 Flat Raceform I’ve found just a few Irish results:
Good Review – Unplaced in Knocksinna Flat Race (Qualified riders) at Baldoyle on Jan 31st over 2m 1f.
Deny’s Adventure – Won Johnswell Maiden Plate at Gowran Park on Feb 26th over 2m 1f.
Killiney – 2nd in Rahens Maiden (qualified riders) at Baldoyle on March 17th over 2 miles. Then 1st Courtown Maiden Plate (qualified riders) at Punchestown on April 29th
They are the only ones from that list. Obviously I have the full results for these races. I’ve got all the Raceforms and I do have Irish form books but I don’t think they go quite far enough back.
What do you need?
