What’s the answer to this guy’s poor form?
I love watching cricket but don’t claim to be anywhere near knowledgeable enough to give the answer to the question I’ve posed.
What I will say though is it seems crazy that he is just expected to get through his poor run of form by batting at the top of the order for England. Why isn’t he being dropped? Or why isn’t he getting an arm around his shoulder with someone saying, “Look son, take a few weeks away from the England set-up, get yourself back to your County team, and start making some centuries again?”
I have no doubt that Cook has a strong mind, but no matter how mentally strong you are, when the eyes of the world are on you and are expecting you to perform (just look at Wayne Rooney), it must be impossible not to feel the pressure when your form is nowhere to be found.
August 20, 2010 at 08:55 #313736It would seem England don’t want to change a winning formula and are keeping faith with Cook in the hope or knowledge that he is capable of turning his form around.
Perhaps he’s not been dropped as who would be the replacement? Bell and Lumb both injured. Bopara not a natural opener and has had problems with form for England aswell. Trescothick would be ideal but is getting on now and it’s not going to happen anyway, do you take a chance with Lyth who is in cracking form with Yorks not sure if he could open but seems a confident young man cant see it happening at present which leaves Carberry or Denly who haven’t really set the world on fire as yet either. Cant think of any others.

August 20, 2010 at 10:37 #313764I appreciate that detailed reply Nathan, thank you.
I wasn’t aware that Bell and Lumb were injured so it just goes to show how much I know about the game.
I just feel – in any sport probably – that an in-form player of slighly less ability is a better option than a seriusly out of form player of more ability.
August 20, 2010 at 16:50 #313839He’s had another mare today!

Form is temporary, class is permanent and all that…
I hope this gives him a great big lift now and he goes on to score loads of runs. The rest of the team today were not good to say the least

Really pleased for him, like you say, I hope he kicks on from here.
