March 20, 2011 at 13:24 #346350Its brilliant mate, usually sunny, great mares, on and off the racetrack . Brilliant atmosphere, then head into town to sink a few cold ones. Great day all round.
March 20, 2011 at 13:24 #346351Yeah, I did it last in 2008. Took about an hour to walk the course (stopping at Beechers and Valentines etc.). There are a lot of drunk shouty people on National day but by and large it’s a really friendly atmosphere. Make sure you get a good seat/position for the National away from people with flailing arms, especially if they are holding a JD at the time. Unfortunately there are too many people around to find an adequate sniper spot to take out John Parrott but you can’t have everything.
March 20, 2011 at 15:01 #346375im going for the first time this year too, but i’m going on the saturday. Im in the county stand has anyone been in that stand, what kind of a view do you get and can you get to the bookie alright cos im not keen on the tote
March 20, 2011 at 15:46 #346384I was in the County Stand Platinum Lounge for National day in 2008. It’s a nice old stand but sit as close to the front as you can come racetime otherwise people are jumping up and down in front of you.
Pray to God you don’t have Mike Cattermole commentating becuase he is worse than useless. He said King John’s Castle had come down earlier in the race, to a tumult of groans, so when KJC appeared late on the scene there were people scratching round for their discarded betting slips!

You get a great view from the County Stand right in front of the winning post. There are bookies in front of all stands but it can be a battle getting through the crowds.
As for Ladies Day its okay but for me its the least enjoyable of the three days, as its just too full of women dressed up and boozed up getting in the way, not to mention the huge amount of broken glasses and drinks bottles cluttering on the floor.

You’re right you can walk the National course up until an hour before the first race. Depending how quickly you walk and if you want to take any photos I’d give yourself between 45 minutes and an hour
March 20, 2011 at 19:38 #346443Am taking my father on the opening day (Lord Sefton Stand) and am really looking forward to it.
We went in the cheap seats to a couple of Nationals in the early 90’s but can’t remember a great deal about it.Have been once since myself to see Monets beat Kauto in the Old Roan, this should be an entirely different experience.
BTW I used a RUK promotion for my tickets and National Express for the travel who are doing deals from various points throughout the country.
