“Wasn’t DADDY LONG LEGS underwhelming after being earmarked as a leading prospect?”
Won a novice hurdle at Ludlow on Wednesday, adding a vital £4,000 to Willie Mullins’s prize fund.
July 12, 2024 at 08:40 #1701571I think Alabama could actually win today in the first at Dundalk

July 12, 2024 at 09:33 #1701572In fairness to the lads air force blue looked superb in the same week as minding was tremendous. Hard to predict who will be top at 3. Try my best broke my heart. Magnificent looking horse and had the world at his feet. Not to be.
July 12, 2024 at 10:08 #1701575I think Try my Best was with Vincent
July 12, 2024 at 10:26 #1701577He was indeed but he was destined to be a great it seemed but never happened.
July 12, 2024 at 11:20 #1701582The hitherto unbeaten Try My Best’s flop in the 1978 2,000 Guineas (he went off even money favourite but trailed home last) remains a complete mystery. A dope test revealed nothing, and Vincent O’Brien claimed that the horse had been incubating an illness at the time, but it was never revealed what that ailment actually was. The soft ground on the day would definitely not have suited the colt, who had a marked top-of-the-ground action, but the fact he ran so abysmally suggests that something else may have been wrong and that he never ran again supports this hypothesis.
July 12, 2024 at 12:09 #1701586I had a poster of him on my wall and really loved the horse. Fortunately the good doctor had plenty other fantastic horses but he was the first horse I really fell in love with and was devastated when he flopped in the guineas. I always treat 2yo sceptically since as just a learning period. Horses like Paddington and warm heart improved by stones in their 3yo careers and I love horses that get better the older they get. John cherry was one of those and celeriac another. Loved these horses.
July 12, 2024 at 12:15 #1701587I remember backing Celeric when he won a minor handicap at Nottingham. I would never have guessed he would go on to win a Gold Cup.
July 12, 2024 at 12:18 #1701589He was just a tryer and he and pat eddery iirc got on so well.
July 12, 2024 at 12:38 #1701594“The best horse Aidan has ever trained”, has a stable companion currently with a higher Timeform rating.

July 12, 2024 at 13:47 #1701596Fascinating which horses we remember fondly. I’m sure will be talking about blackbeard for many years to come. What a dude.
July 12, 2024 at 21:34 #1701648Waterville who was going to win Derby a few years back strolled around Caulfield week or two back , I’d say he’s on his last prep with Chris Walker at his training fees , he will be in online sale after that .
March 8, 2025 at 12:07 #1722124Was at Randwick today and saw the mighty Waterville (Mr Waterville) in the flesh ,mind boggles at what he showed on gallops to be unraced Derby talking horse , hes very very slow . Good money after bad paying Sydney training fees for him .
November 28, 2025 at 10:17 #1745757Mr Waterville somehow still in Waller yard, 2 nd run after a break over 2000 at Rosehill tomorrow . Still not won in OZ , rare to see one given so many chances . Carries 53 kgs off bottom tomorrow .
