Trump hasn’t backed down about anything. He was playing hardball. His threats of tariffs and military action were to get what we wants: a deal with the rest of NATO over more American military access to Greenland and the Arctic and access to its mineral wealth.
January 23, 2026 at 13:17 #1751326Could soon? It’s been happening for ages. Blatant AI crap and bots are all over social media already. Funnily enough, nearly always pushing the same ‘talking points’ and far more often than not promoting the political right.
It’s a serious problem that is not being taken remotely seriously.
As for the Lib Dems I’d still rate them well above the Labour-Tory-Reform monolith.
January 23, 2026 at 13:23 #1751328Trump will NOT get his hands on Greenland’s mineral deposits. That’s all he wants; alleged security problems was a mere diversion.
January 23, 2026 at 16:18 #1751338Well his hardball is now flat CAS , he can talk framework all he wants , Europe and Canada have stood together and he can try as always to put this as some kind of victory , that certainly isn’t the case , Trump has enough problems at home , I’m sure he ‘s being advised to concentrate on them , if not he’s liable to lose the house and any hopes of pushing through his next crazy scheme
January 23, 2026 at 16:27 #1751341He has got increased military access to Greenland, which is what he wanted. And he will get access to the mineral wealth eventually.
Europe is a part of the world in decline. It is going to be an irrelevance within a generation or two and certainly within the geopolitical struggle between America and China.
January 23, 2026 at 16:34 #1751344Hes in NATO , he would always get access , he’s not getting what he wants , he wanted the country , he’s not getting it , more than likely the frame work can will be kicked down the road until he leaves
January 23, 2026 at 18:08 #1751355Like all bullies, he chickened out when confronted. I don’t understand how Britain can tolerate his denigration of your soldiers. It won’t even be news in the US, of course
January 23, 2026 at 18:45 #1751361It is about time Starmer worked it out that if we stand collectively with Europe, we can defeat Trump and his thugs. There is absolutely very little difference between Hitler and the Gestapo and Trump and ICE.
The reason our soldiers are being attacked, libellously, is that Trump and his evil mob are angry that the UK stood with Europe over Greenland. It is a warning – don’t do it again!
Europe will get stronger, not weaker, now they are joining forces with Canada. Trump and his moronic advisers haven’t yet worked that their only achievement is to force the middle powers (as Carney describes us) to move towards China.
January 23, 2026 at 20:51 #1751374Perhaps the largest U turn yet incoming, with Starmer beginning to back down over the Chagos Islands giveaway.
January 23, 2026 at 21:04 #1751377Let’s not get misty eyed about China. A one-party state and brutal human rights abusing dictatorship.
It does look like the 21st century will belong to it. But I can’t help feeling that in the rather unhappy future coming, the people living under the Chinese jackboot will (despite its faults) look back on the late 20th/early 21st century as a Pax Americana.
Assuming they are allowed to remember, of course. Because a freely available internet will be a thing of the past.
January 23, 2026 at 23:14 #1751411Value this week proves Starmer is already aware of that , Trumps comment is as usual a poke of anger , would be interesting to know how many of our lost troops where lost to so called American friendly fire ….
January 23, 2026 at 23:19 #1751413Good to see Starmer bollock Trump over his disgusting words for a change. I’m guessing they’ll fall on deaf ears though.
January 23, 2026 at 23:20 #1751414I was worried about mentioning that, so I’m glad you’ve raised the issue HDLG. I seem to remember comments during the Iraq war about our soldiers being worried about the American soldiers and friendly fire, and wasn’t there at least one well publicised incident where a convoy was accidentally attacked by the US?
January 24, 2026 at 03:17 #1751429I think Trump is roughly on the same danger level as Putin, both are egotistical
maniacs who will seize what they want by hook or by crook. I think his comments
about british or EU troops being a sort of backup to the US were ill-advised and
uncalled for. Could he go furher and add some meat to the bone on his statement
if he wanted to, well yes he could. He would state that in the Afganistan conflict
2,461 US Troops were killed about 1,000 other Nato troops were killed, 457 were British.
In the Iraq war, 4,500 US troops were killed, 179 British troops also lost their lives. Now don’t shoot the messenger here, and it’s a tragedy whoever gave their life, no
matter where they came from. The facts are the facts, no more than that. I imagine
that is where he was coming from, but it was still an insult to the families who
lost their loved ones. If I were to play devils advocate, I might ask “does he have
a point”. Discuss…..January 24, 2026 at 07:23 #1751435Obviously the US sent more troops than any other country as they also have a much bigger population than other NATO countries. Percentage wise of troops served would give a much better indication.
January 24, 2026 at 07:33 #1751436There was a grain of truth in what he said. But some things are far better left unsaid.
Having said that, Starmer’s outrage is phoney and will convince no one. Someone who is content to see British veterans prosecuted for alleged misdemeanors years after the event. One of the many reasons why the weak little man is so widely despised.
I have far more contempt for the corrupt British politicians who have needlessly sent British servicemen to their deaths in wars which have nothing to do with us than I have for Trump. Then they line up every November with their poppies on, cry a few crocodile tears and pretend to care. They disgust me.
Look at how our ex-servicemen are treated. Plenty of the homeless people you encounter on the streets are ex-military. They have put their lives on the line but are now treated with total indifference by a political establishment which doesn’t give a damn about them. So Starmer can **** off with his outrage.
January 24, 2026 at 07:44 #1751439America has got involved in many more phoney wars than we have , Vietnam anyone , as for Trump being as dangerous as Putin , Trump is under the illusion he can manage Putin/Russia , Putin has made a fool of him on the world stage a number of times , the US isn’t the superpower anymore , it’s the Russia/China alliance now
