The Handicapper Stone Of Folca holds the electronically-timed (Indigenous’s was hand timed) world record for 5f, 53.69 seconds.

Imagine what a top-class sprinter could clock, especially if Andrew Cooper actually left the taps alone for once in his ground-softening obsessed life.

It’s long been a dream of mine – a Group 1 over 5f at Epsom on Derby Day.

Maybe move the Temple Stakes there and upgrade it?

Yet another ludicrous idea from me, or a plan so cunning you could catch a weasel with it?

It might get Racing a bit of mainstream news coverage each year?

I know we’ve been discussing reducing the Derby distance, but this seems extreme ;-)

More seriously, I like this idea. Have long thought the cards surrounding the Derby could do with a boost.

I like it too. Upgrade the “Epsom Dash”.

Especially if it was won by Usain Colt. Although that name has no doubt been done. Either way I’ll get my coat.

I’ve thought several times about this over the years. Certainly improve the quality on the day and would love the record to go. However, hate to put a dampener on things but…

A Group 1 over a course that has a normally massive draw bias?
    So close to Royal Ascot?
Not sure you’d get many turning up.
…And if the record is to go the going must be pretty firm. Does Epsom try for firm ground on Derby Day?

It’s a nice idea but sadly I suspect the “mainstream media” would largely ignore it until the first serious injury or fatality when they’d be all over the “story” of “horses being made to go too fast on unsuitably fast ground on inappropriately configured course” etc etc.

You have to race at ‘Ass-cett’ to get promoted to a Group race.
