Master Minded is cast iron, rock solid, lay material. VPU will reverse form, being a course and festival specialist.
Master Minded’s jumping was suspect in France (and indeed on debut here) and I predict it will come up short in the Champion Chase.
Tidal Bay’s jumping was suspect too, and that was supposed to be the reason why he wouldn’t win yesterday.

Horse is one of the biggest antepost gambles in the race after spitting out kauto star on the gallops.
Horse can run from off the pace and can make the pace if needs be.
Horse backed heavily before facing Voy Por Ustedes, to suggest that VPU isnt beating him in any shape.
Horse faces VPU, VPU turns up in good shape and gets spat out at newbury.
Horse has put in two brilliant rounds of jumps, the latter of which looked nigh on foot perfect.
Horse has improved 2 stone in a season and has repotedly improved since then.
Ruby Walsh elects this horse over another who he had previously said wouldnt be beaten at cheltenham.
Clive Smith says "Its unbelievable just how good this horse is".
Nicholls elects the horse as the most likely winner of his pair. That would look a cast iron back to me, but then again:
Horse is a five year oldLay him

He was apparently working well with Kauto Star at home I haven’t seen anyone anywhere say he was beating Kauto Star at home or under what conditions they were working.

I don’t buy the racing post mate. Any chance you can post the relevant comments?
March 12, 2008 at 15:25 #150262Have just typed up the relevant bit quickly, the report should come up tomorrow in the cutting library of the racing post site, but isnt on there yet.
In december, Masterminded was not a champion chase contender. Nor was he when december gave way to january, not even after his sandown success, following which he could still be backed at 25-1.
It was only with the revelation that the young pretender – bidding to become the first five-year-old ever to win the champion chase – had spat out kauto star on the ditcheat gallops that master minded entered the equation….

Does it mention where that info came from or under what conditions the gallop was – weight carried / distance / riders instructions etc?
March 12, 2008 at 15:33 #150267No mate, but saying that mottershead has been doing these preview evenings with nicholls lately, so may have come from there, although think mottershead is firmly flying the flag of the master minded camp.
March 12, 2008 at 15:33 #150269Ok. Thanks for posting the info anyway mate.
March 12, 2008 at 15:42 #150275With this strong wind ((without rain) drying the ground it could yet become good. The times were probably Good-Soft yesterday, with the headwind slowing them further to make it seem even slower.
Going against Tamarinbleu (unless more rain falls).
Apparently the forecast is not as bad now than it was.

I thought about getting my Tamarinbleu refund with the ground drying out but decided against it in the end. Its not the most significant bet I’ve ever had and the horse does have winning form on good ground and Cheltenham is a stayers track where you have to get up the hill so I’ll still take my chances.
Wouldn’t mind some unexpected rain but it won’t be the end of the world if he gets beat. I was going to back The Listener in the Ryanair but he’s one that really wouldn’t want the ground drying up.
Agree with you about the wind by the way the ground possibly weren’t as slow as the times suggested.
March 12, 2008 at 16:10 #150281I backed a few yesterday for today who were good prices on good-soft with strong headwindwind making the race a test of stamina. With the drying ground and racing in less of a wind, they still might win, but they are nowhere near the "good value" bets I made at the time.
Am I allowed to ask for my money back?

With some firms yes if you contact them. Paddy Power certainly, Ladbrokes and Hills also I believe.
Worth contacting your bookie and asking mate.
March 12, 2008 at 16:37 #150290Will do Flash, most are with Betfair and see they have cancelled all bets I put on yesterday for today.

Value Is EverythingMarch 12, 2008 at 17:20 #150305I believe that Nicholls was quoted as saying he did an unbelievable piece of work with Kauto from which the implication could be drawn that he beat the champ over a few fences and as Kauto was the highest rated 2 miler in the country last year thats pretty decent!! Not sure Kauto retains all of his pace though as I imagine they train him slightly differently.
I’ve never heard anyone say it specifically but I also think Clive Smith made similar remarks..
March 12, 2008 at 21:51 #150392The local butcher has stuck the fillet steak and the mince back in the fridge (but, alarmingly, he has the mince bagged up with my name on it, must be a VPU fan).
Some interesting reading. I respect the points about VPU and fear him more than Twist Magic or Tamarinbleu (who I, admittedly somewhat illogically, just cannot have as a Champion Chase winner).
However, when Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls speak about a horse in the way they have about Master Minded it invariably pays to listen, and to act boldly.
I agree that he may not be foot perfect and a fall would not be the greatest surprise ever but even building that possibility into the price 11/4 is still mad value.
You’ll be reading this tomorrow and it’ll all be so very clear.
Unless you’re a butcher in Berwickshire, in which case you’ll be restocking the fillet steak counter.
March 13, 2008 at 14:24 #150542Very nice
