It doesn’t happen very often, a couple of times a year I guess and very rarely at Cheltenham, but every now and then a horse stands out as an absolute stonking bet and one of those appears tomorrow.
MASTER MINDED will be carrying a goodly portion of the Cormack fortune as it meanders it’s merry way around Prestbury Park tomorrow and I will be very surprised if it gets beaten. Surprised and skint actually.
Will it be steak, chips and a nice bottle of red or mince, tatties and Irn Bru for the Cormack clan tomorrow evening?
March 11, 2008 at 23:09 #149944You’re not Fist Of Fury in disguise are you?
I think he is big on that also.To tell the truth, I was a bit disappointed with the PN horses on Tuesday (today, god knows what time it is
) and because of that I’m opposing both of the PN runners. The more I look at the race the more I think VPU (cos I can’t spell the full name) is an absolute cracking bet. My logic = I’m drunk, and I like previous courses winners for some reason

Good luck Corm.

March 11, 2008 at 23:12 #149945I fancy Tamarinbleu myself but then what do I know, judging by Tuesday’s efforts – not a lot.
Master Minded could be anything but if you ignore the hype the bare stats say he beat Voy Por Ustedes 5 lengths getting 6 pounds – thats it, peak of his form to date and only on that one run. Should he really be Champion Chase favourite? If he were trained by someone else other than Paul Nicholls would he be Champion Chase favourite?
Twist Magic is better than at Ascot but will he get up the hill? He may do, may not. He’s the forgotten horse if you like and shouldn’t be easily ruled out.
Voy Por Ustedes won an awful event last year and this year has looked good but far from outstanding. Loves Cheltenham will battle but isn’t convincing.
Tamarinbleu – will he have enough pace? Remains to be seen but had Twist Magic beaten three out at Ascot. That form is probably the best two mile form this season.
Surely one of those four will win? If they don’t then I’ll admit to not having a clue about this game.

I would still have a slight worry about MM’s jumping. 8 chase races and 3 times he’s ended up without his jockey. No doubting he’s got an engine and you never know perhaps the faster the pace the better he will jump ? I can’t quite make my mind up what to bet, Twist Magic might struggle up the hill if the wind is blowing again, Tamarinbleu could run them ragged but could also set the race up for the rest which includes VPU who I don’t really think is anything other than a good horse. Might just watch or maybe do something silly like a place on Fair Along.
March 11, 2008 at 23:24 #149948I have to admit to being a big Voy Por Ustedes fan, so as a great believer in form over the course, he is the one for me.
There – that is the kiss of death to be sure !
March 11, 2008 at 23:29 #149949I think MM looks short, VPU and TM about right, TAM ok value and FA and MAN overpriced. I’ll back the latter 3.
March 11, 2008 at 23:29 #149950I will be surprised if Twist Magic wins, he did’t get home at Ascot (admittedly soft ground), can’t see him getting up that hill, depends if they have any more/overnight rain. That means he’ll win then.
Tamarinbleu is interesting, probably take them along and try to stretch their stamina – maybe VPU wants that now, so I wouldn’t right him off.March 11, 2008 at 23:41 #149953

Well its been lashing down in Oxford (30 miles from Cheltenham) for the past 3 hours. Just been driving and the roads are drenched. If Cheltenham got as much as we have had – Twist Magic has no chance on the ground (judging by Ascot run).
VPU lost to the average Hobbs horse (yes giving weight) at Cheltenham – not sure he wants it too soft.
Think Master Minded at 11/4 is backable and I am with Cormack on that. I quite enjoy the Nicholls hot pos get turned over but do not think his horses ran badly today.
Noland – ran respectable. (especially considering his warm up race). On form, I did not think he was ever a 7/4 shot.
March 11, 2008 at 23:42 #149954No 5yo in history has ever won the race.
Nicholls horses may nhave gone off the boil at justy the wrong time also.If he wins then he goes down in history as the best 5yo chaser ever in racing history. He may well turn out to be the best ever 5yo chaser, but he wont be carrying any of my money. Good luck though.

I’d think some French jumping experts might disagree. I wouldn’t be surprised if they thought Kauto Star wasn’t the best in Europe.
March 11, 2008 at 23:47 #149957Kauto Star isnt a 5yo?
He fell in this race I think when he was a 5yo and fav.
March 11, 2008 at 23:47 #149958This is no ordinary 5yo. Will be the best looking horse in the field and is in his second season chasing (ran as a 4yo in France).
Think it is between Master Minded (hope he jumps well) and Tamarinbleu.
Ginge
Value Is EverythingMarch 11, 2008 at 23:48 #149959Kauto Star was 6 when he unseated in the Champion Chase. He’d have run in the Arkle as a 5yo but for injury.
March 11, 2008 at 23:49 #149960I was extremely impressed with the horse when he beat Voy Pur. However his jumping will be tested and I would advise a place lay to compliment your win bet. As this has faller written all over him.

With you all the way there Cormack, the classiest looking horse in the race by some way IMHO, Nicholls has squezzed 30lbs of improvement out of him already and the believer in me is confident theres more to come. I’ve chosen not to lay off a penny of my bet on him, as think hes monster material.
Its good to have the supreme novice out of the way as Ive got some betting flex for the week but ill be bricking it before tomorrows race, as am hoping divine intervention doesnt throw a spanner between Master Minded and his seemingly inevitable destiny…Come On The Proverbial Cert, Take Them To School…

Then that highlights the severity of this 5yos task even more. kauto couldnt do it as a 6yo and I will be astounded if this 5yo can do it.
Beating one rival was a great performance. His task tomorrow is an altogether different one. Jumping will be put under great strain and there are quite a few horses in this race.
Im not sure of the winner but the 5yo is the first one I have crossed out. (Katchitt was the first one I crossed out of the CH to be fair, but a 5yo does win the CH every once in a blue moon)
March 11, 2008 at 23:56 #149965I’m against the Nicholls duo- MM because of age and jumping and TM because he won’t get home. I think VPU is a cast-iron each-way at TDK’s generous 10/3.
BTW there hasn’t been any significant rain in Cheltenham since just after racing, when there was a good shower.
