I think ‘farcical’ is about the only word that covers this one.
If Ferdy Murphy was judged to have issued improper instructions in the running of Mansonn Leda, then I’d hate to think what would be said of the trainers of Baan, Agglestone Rock, Bridgewater Boys and Capitalise.
January 30, 2009 at 03:03 #207119Dont underestimate that winner.
There were a few who were doubtful stayers in that field so there were plenty of hold up tactics going on early on, but they were all "at it" three quarters of a mile from home. He simply galloped them into the ground.
He’s been rated by Haslam as being capable of racing in the 80’s on the flat but has never really got going on the level up until now because he’s a better hurdler who might end up going to Cheltenahm for something like the County Hurdle.
It’s only because of the weather (he doesnt really like soft ground although he just about acts on it) that they’ve resorted to a couple of spins on the flat with him just to keep him going.
Wouldnt be surprised to see him out off a penalty next week because whatever the handicapper does to him after that it will be a lot worse than a 6lbs rise.
January 30, 2009 at 03:40 #207124I think at the distance the winner was different class.

Whether or not the winner was simply too good, you surely don’t give a guaranteed stayer that much of an advantage from the off?
Time may show that he was incredibly well in, but the ‘tactics’ of the rest of the field just don’t make sense to me.
January 30, 2009 at 05:38 #207139I agree he was given plenty of rope early on but he made it a very stiff test for them.
A good pace early and he kicked on in front with a full circuit left to go.
As i say, there were a few doubtful stayers in there (also by and large thoroughly exposed) and if they’d tried to go with him from the off it would have been the same result i think, he was absolutely tanking along all the way.
If he’d been ridden to the line there wouldnt have been much change out of 20 lenghts so it’s difficuilt to say the unenterprising tactics behind him made any difference.
He was well in there but he wont be come next Wednesday when he’s put up to about 85. Any hatrick bid needs to be sorted out pretty sharpish.
February 4, 2009 at 05:25 #208080will be up to 85 tomorrow and still thought to be well in.
May go to Wolves on Friday under a double penalty before the handicapper has his wicked way with him again next Wednesday for the pasting he just doled out at Southwell where a field of 11f performers were just about out on their legs after the pace he set in the first mile.
No price at all today, but still worth watching out for in the next few weeks.
