Just read an article in the RP about them being fined due to not carrying out correct checks and letting people lose way more than they can afford to – https://www.racingpost.com/news/latest/this-is-not-acceptable-gambling-commission-hits-888-with-94-million-fine/540899

Funny, because I recieved an email from 888.com yesturday saying this –

“Bet: Simply stake a minimum of £500 on Horse Racing each week in the three weeks leading up to the Cheltenham Festival (min odds Evens (2.00)).
Get: For each week you complete the challenge you will receive a £50 Free Bet for one of the Festival days.”

They have never once asked how much I earn or whether I’m in education instead, they know I’m a losing punter with them and I almost certainly tick the boxes for them to be classified as a ‘problem gambler’ – yet they have the audacity to email me trying to encourage me to lose £500 a week for the next 3 weeks? A grand and a half?

Absolute wronguns, even calling it a “challenge”, seething at the manipulation of these ***** (excuse the language), not a surprise though is it sadly.

Probably when their profits and thus taxes given to the government drop, no time soon then :-(

Ben, bet on your terms not theirs. Remember talking to a workmate who liked to play the roulette in the bookies, and to be fair to him he was probably lucky and won big. However you can quite we easily lose it. I told him to always bet within his means, never give back a big win as quickly and when they say “When the fun stops, stop!” They have to say that, but probably don’t mean it. However I personally don’t want to have them delve into my finances like Paddy Power want to so I can continue to bet with them. I consider my finances my own business and will manage it like any adult.

I agree Red Rum, gambling is certainly dangerous especially for young men who have certain personality traits, I first got sucked in on those machines about 12 years ago, funnily enough there was a ladbrokes just a minutes walk from where I went to college lol they knew what they were doing. There were a couple of great Indian chaps that worked there though, very friendly and always encouraging you not to bet more than you could afford and the manager – Prutish his name was tipped me Synchronised for the Gold Cup the year it won.

    Great times.

Long while since I entered a betting shop and I don’t use bookies on line anymore.
All my bets are with the Exchanges and if I can’t get the price, I don’t bet.

Yes Jimmy but it’s not that simple when there’s addiction involved.

Purwell, I’d tried the Betting Exchanges (Betfair) but found that when your debit card expired it was difficult to change cards, unless you were showing credit. Which I never did. Also try greening up on a few bets and tried laying. Found the excitement lacking so have just a few quid at weekend on the selections on my own comp and TKF pick 3, and when I remember a free go on the ITV 7.

P.S. I see gamble taken the role of the bard.

I only bet in handicaps of either 8 or 9 runners and I use my own ratings to price up each race and as I said earlier, if I can’t get the price, I don’t bet.

I have tried laying but it is very frustrating because you can lose a couple of months profits in one bad day.

Occasionally I may have a bet on the big races at weekends just for fun.

When they all sing the same tune, sit up and take notice.

You’ve hit the right note there Purwell !

20 years ago when I was deeply immersed in fora writing there was a period I wrote about the devil and described his form, and I remember using the word leathery, and I visited some strange internet sites to get some authenticity. I was writing late at night it was 2 am and was sitting by the window in the kitchen of a second floor apartment quite near bankrokeciti. The kettle was a good six feet away on top of the fridge and suddenly it somehow started to boil and with little water in. I got up and switched it off then my computer crashed and was out of action for weeks as I am not one of the brethren. Now at work the next day I mentioned the kettle incident to an Irish guy and he told me the same happened in his house at the moment his grandmother died. Later that morning I had to interview someone and asked their date of birth – The sixth of June 1966 he said. That is unusual I said and the devil was mentioned. I suppose it could all be rationally explained and like buses all coming at the same time, however I have never attempted to describe the devil in form since that time.

Rather amusingly I received an email from airbnb today and was drawn to looking at their address.

    Airbnb, Inc.

    888 Brannan St.

    San Francisco, CA 94103, USA

    “When’s the next bus ?”
