Jonbon, who fetched £570,000 after winning a 3m Dromohane 4yo Point Maiden by 15 lengths in November, holds an entry in the concluding Bumper at Newbury on Saturday.
He is a full brother to Douvan and the fact he has been sent to Nicky Henderson suggests the UK is not entirely bereft of the potential material to impact future Cheltenham Festivals.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 23, 2021 at 08:53 #1531998I’d sooner be the seller than the buyer, no matter how much money I had.
March 23, 2021 at 09:02 #1531999I could easily suggest how many times Jonbon would need to win at the Festival merely to recoup the outlay but, as racehorse ownership is not driven by business models, it would be a futile and irrelevant exercise.
Those intangible, incalculable, things “kudos” and “social cache” – even wealth grandstanding for some – have driven racehorse ownership for centuries along with, of course, a genuine love of, and passion for, the game.
It’s a Hell of a lot of money for a 5yo gelding but if he wins just one Grade 1 in his life I suspect the owner will consider it money well spent.

Not much point looking to Henderson for the future at Cheltenham either – he’s 70 years old and he isn’t looking anything like as good since Corky retired. His record this season will mostly be remembered for the horses he didn’t run, rather than the ones he did.
March 23, 2021 at 10:06 #1532007I wonder if he now regrets not running a fit and healthy Altior at Sandown in a Grade 1 race which he breezily dismissed as not mattering?

March 23, 2021 at 11:29 #1532014Point to point winners should be disqualified from running in Bumpers.
Also once a horse has won a bumper they should be disqualified from ever running in one again.
March 23, 2021 at 11:32 #1532015That would render the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival a Grade 1 Maiden Bumper.

It should not be taking 3 seasons for a horse to develop from a point to point winner into an open chaser.
Appreciate It will be 7 rising 8 before we see him over a fence, despite him having won a point to point 3 years ago.
Same with Sir Gerhard and Kilcruit.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 23, 2021 at 12:09 #1532022Kevin Blake wrote an article a few months ago in which he said any novice rated above a certain mark should be barred from running in novice events after a cut off date and thereby forcing them to run in open company at the big festivals. He cited Envoi Allen as a case in point, saying he is being hailed as a superstar but has now spent three seasons running in bumpers and novice events. Blake contends this is based on an outdated idea that horses need time when in reality the old fashioned store horse is dying out.
March 23, 2021 at 20:11 #1532084I think they said on upping the ante that 25 of the 28 winners were 8 or younger at Cheltenham
So id agree that a year in bumpers unless your horse is very green is a waste of time

And yet this is a thread about a Store which recently fetched £570,000.
If it’s dying out, it’s a very slow death!

Yep. Will he stay sound is the £570k question.
