Oh Yes Friggo – Grand National party was amazing. Really enjoying working for William Hill now :)
Brilliant subsidised with vouchers so as post-Cheltenham went out on the ales Sunday night :)
April 20, 2007 at 20:39 #53216As someone who attends the meeting every year it takes ages to get out as it is and the thought of another two hours on to the journey home is horrendous!:( I guess it’s down to football being more important to the BBC than racing? Or what?

The ‘low Sun’ thing is a complete non-starter.
If the Sun were that low in the sky some 3 hours before sunset we’d have more to worry about than a few missed fences.;) ÂÂÂ
April 21, 2007 at 08:00 #53218Spot on RH.
Don’t want the race moved to 5.00pm though and as others have said I can’t see the newspapers relishing the idea, notwithstanding the fact that getting copy in, collated and printed does not take the time it did in the days of hot metal typesetting

April 21, 2007 at 10:37 #53219
Never overlook the power of the jockeys when it comes to ‘low’ sun. At Kelso on March 3rd this year, two fences were bypassed due to the ‘low trajectory of the sun’ in the 3:20 race.
The last race on that card was staged at 5:35 and sunset was at 5:55, so three hours is barely a sufficient margin, at least not with the current starting procedures!

April 21, 2007 at 10:44 #53220If the race was run at 5 o’clock this year, Monkerhostin would have started about 2/1 with Point Barrow and Joes Edge jt 2nd favs at 9/4!:o

 I dont think it should be moved to 5pm at all. i agree, the setting sun will start to cause problems. the horses will have to wait longer for the race. the punters who have gone to see that specific race may go off the idea as im sure many leave the course after the race to avoid the traffic when the whole meeting is finished.
I agree, if the BBC were that bothered about the coverage why do they not do more on the horse racing scene, thus intrest would get higher due to more regular programmes on TV rather than the GN and ascot, plus your saturday C4. They should do a preview programme, or two..rather than just a clip to advertise that is is on the BBC.
I dont believe it should be changed for viewer ratings or for the ‘if’ factor of the cancellation of the bumper. what happened this year was for the best, and thanks to their concern at the course they managed to save graphic approach.
Besides, if it was run at 5, the bumper would be at 5.40 or something.
I would rather see the race moved to a 3.15 slot as thats what im used to the big races being ie cheltenham. But i dont think it needs moving at all.
If the BBC want more viewers then do more for the horse racing field! Dont change the time of the races..simply show more! Bring in more genuine fans!
April 24, 2007 at 20:15 #53222I enjoyed the 1997 Monday evening race but that was a one off and don`t want it later. I wouldn`t give any ground to the BBC- their coverage is so excruciating they now rival the Mirabel Topham commentary team in the 50s when most of the action was described as"up and over" , and Teal , the eventual winner, was called a faller at Becher’s first time
April 24, 2007 at 22:23 #53223Welcome to the forums Pilgarlic, good to see you adopting the name of an Aintree stalwart ;)
April 24, 2007 at 23:09 #53224I’d back the 5.00 start.
One thing the US racing authorities worked out early on was that the day’s best race should be left till last.
I’d have the Derby at 5.00 on the first Wednesday in June, too. There’s a fusion.;)
