October 26, 2010 at 18:43 #324745Alydar not only managed four Group 1 seconds as a 3-y-old, he lost to the same horse on all four occasions, Affirmed.
The four races were the three legs of the US triple Crown, plus the Travers Stakes at Saratoga in August.
He’d also been second three times to Affirmed as a 2-y-old.
Hard to believe any horse is going to be that unlucky ever again!
Their famous duel in the Belmont Stakes is well worth watching – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apBIGFWMFr0

October 26, 2010 at 19:11 #324752I reckon I can trump you all with Darjina in 2008, 5 or 6 group 1 seconds if I remember correctly.

I think the essence of the thread, JJMS, is that it actually happens quite often!
October 26, 2010 at 19:44 #324758Paco Boy has finished second to Goldikova in the Queen Anne and Foret this season.
Breeders Cup is Grade 1. Assuming we equate that to Group 1 , he could be on his way to the unwanted hat trick shortly.
October 26, 2010 at 19:45 #324759Easy Goer was 2nd in 3 G1s in 1989, his only 3 losses of the year. Unfortunately they came in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Breeders’ Cup Classic. He was beaten by the same horse, Sunday Silence, in each of those races.
Skip Away was 2nd in 4 G1s in 1997-Donn Handicap, Gulfstream Park Handicap, Pimlico Special and Woodward Stakes. That same year Silver Charm was 2nd in 3 G1s-Malibu Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, and Belmont Stakes.
Gentlemen was 2nd in 3 G1s in 1998-Woodward, Pacific Classic, and Jockey Club Gold Cup.
October 26, 2010 at 19:46 #324761Four for Phoenix Tower 2008, Lockinge, Prince of Wales, Eclipse, Juddmonte International.
October 26, 2010 at 23:18 #324805In 2004, Cape Of Good Hope was runner-up in 3 Group 1s – the Hong Kong sprint, the Chairman’s Sprint Prize and the Centenary Sprint – on each occasion to Silent Witness.

This is true but perhaps it should be noted that of those 3 only the HK Sprint was an International G1.
Viva Pataca ran 2nd to Ramonti in the 2007 HK Cup (beaten by a smart Dettori ride in December), 2nd to Sun Classique in the 2008 Sheema Classic (beaten by the horror draw in March), and 2nd in the HK G1 Champions & Chater Cup by Packing Winner in May near the end of that HK season.
