Well done with Shalaa Jac.
great price……Thanks Nathan, Steve & nwalton just got back from Newmarket….
I couldn’t believe it but I found a bookie offering 16/1 about Shalaa and grabbed his arm off, that’s my July Cup Saturday paid for
Shalaa looked a picture in the paddock he’s a real class act and now waiting for Fang and Nissar to make another appearance as he has really franked the form for them today by winning a Group 2.Lumiere is a really sweet Filly and nothing could overshadow her looks in the paddock today, she really did the business flying home by 6 lengths to win the John Deere Stakes, the best performance of the day. The 2nd favourite Alqubbah looked good in the paddock but going to post he looked green and his action was all over the place, give him a bit longer he definitely needed that run.
Great day, great weather can’t wait to get back there again for the July Cup. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 9, 2015 at 20:37 #1127294Sanus Per Aquam is ante-post favourite for the Derby at 20/1 after storming home tonight.
He’ll get a mile standing on his head. He’s a big colt with a relaxed stride that covers a lot of ground. He’ll be a horse who lengthens, rather than quickens and he looks a resolute and relentless galloper.
Jim Bolger was well pleased and said he wanted to get another run into the horse before The Futurity, further commenting that the colt is his sire, Teofilo, incarnate.
The big question is will he train on better than his father, who didn’t run after winning the Dewhurst narrowly in bringing the curtain down on a five race unbeaten juvenile run?
A terrific looking prospect, I would tend to look to step him to a mile sooner rather than later, as I believe his best chance of being beaten would be one of the 6f horses stepping up to 7f.
Sanus Per Aquam translates from Latin as Health Through Water. If he trains on, it may well be a case of Wealth Through Slaughter next season
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 10, 2015 at 12:18 #1128192Wow was Lumiere impressive. Imagine it will be back to HQ for the Sweet Solera stakes Mark Johnston won last year with Muraaqaba, going to have to be something useful around to be beating her this year.
July 10, 2015 at 23:57 #1128378I’m keeping an eye out for:-
HAYADH Grey colt by Oasis Dream-Warling (Montjeu) in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow 2.35pm.Currently 10/1 with Paddy Power he won his maiden at Haydock over 7 furlongs on G/F ground running well despite being coltish and taking a keen hold to post, he then ran again at Haydock just over a week ago on Soft ground finishing 1 three quarter lengths 2nd to Galileo Gold after being squeezed for room.
Frankie Dettori will ride him tomorrow in place of Robert Havlin who has ridden him in both his races.
He must be place potential and doubt he will be 10/1 on the day..Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 11, 2015 at 11:14 #1128567I’m keeping an eye out for:-

He must be place potential and doubt he will be 10/1 on the day..I wanted to be against the early favourite for this race, Air Vice Marshall, who opened at 15/8.
Timeform have given him the thumbs up today and reckon he can take this step up “in his stride” but I’m not so sure. The O’Brien yard have a few short priced ones well beaten recently, including Lieutenant General, who was 1/3F. The defeat looked even more puzzling when Sanus Per Aquam, who had edged him into second on their debuts, won impressively and became the new favourite for both Guineas and Derby.
Air Vice Marshall was third and then won his maiden but neither race has worked out very well (no winners from ten starts combined) and Rockaway Valley, who won the race when the O’Brien colt was third, looked a bit ill at ease when beaten favourite behind Painted Cliffs.
War Department was a horse I thought would run well in The Coventry but he was slowly away that day and the odds were always against him with so much speed in the race and the ground riding fast. He clipped heels and almost fell before being allowed to come home in his own time in last place. I don’t think he would have been placed that day after his slow start but he’s a lot better than that run. I think he’ll be much better suited by the extra furlong today but he’s no value at 5/1 for me, even if he did earn a lofty rating from Timeform on his Leicester debut. The runner up that day was well beaten favourite in a Chester nursery and I remain a sceptic of any one off, outstanding looking, stopwatch rating.
I expect Tony Curtis to make big improvement even if it is only 9 days since his Epsom win. Not an expensive purchase he was nominated by me as one to watch out for, even if that was only partly so I could make a corny joke about his name. The stable won this last year with Estidhkaar and I am sure they had numerous others they could have sent here in his place, with a 3/5 record the past five years in the contest. At 11/1 I would put the Caution Quid on him.
Birchwood and your own horse Hayadh both looked promising sorts but confidence is tempered by both meeting defeat last time. Hugo Palmer’s Galileo Gold beat Gosden’s colt last time and he should have a line as to where he stands pitching the well named They Seek Him Here (son of Elusive Pimpernel) into bat against Hayadh this time after winning a Kempton maiden when seemingly unfancied at 16/1 and claimer ridden. Pat Smullen looks an eye-catching substitute for the Biscuit Baron’s horse today.
Tony Curtis to look the part for me in a “Great Race”
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

O’Brein runs Johannes Vermeer at tipperary today in 7f maiden
Finn McCool, full brother to Roderic O Connor and name ties in with Giant’s Causeway
Idaho, cost 750,000 Guineas and full brother to Highland Reel
San Francisco full brother to Tapestry and John F Kennedy
These are the ones that caught my eye in the early run through the O’Brien colts.
They are all Galileo but he is the sire doing the business. Obviously John F Kennedy hasn’t been anywhere near the expectations this year and I prefer to see them run first before having any thoughts of next year.
Johannes Vermeer was well beaten today and the O’Brien stable have had a few short ones beaten recently. Yet another Jim Bolger winner in that race and she was only seventh of eight in the same maiden where Ballydoyle made her debut the time before. Just a bit of a concern with the O’Brien team for me at the moment with these shorties getting turned over. Jim Bolger almost certainly has a nice batch this year.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 12, 2015 at 00:16 #1129810Steve…Hayadh in the paddock very coltish again and spooked at the cameraman going to post which set him alight, he’s a big baby at the moment, very rangy and did catch the eye and I don’t think Frankie was too hard on him once Birchwood started his winning run.
I’d like to add Simon Crisford’s FIRST SELECTION to the 2yo list after todays win, I was pleased to get 13/2 about him.
Stood out in the paddock on looks out of Diktat by a Mozart mare. Here’s BALLYDOYLE going to post before winning her Maiden at Newmarket this afternoon
Galileo-Butterfly Cove (Storm Cat)Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 12, 2015 at 10:06 #1130550I felt my hairs stand up on end at Lumiere’s debut. Cannot wait to see this filly again
July 12, 2015 at 22:40 #1130585Where would you have her run next Ghost?
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 12, 2015 at 23:05 #1130589Would have to be the Lowther Stakes Nathan. Mind you, I’m sure this filly could dish it up to the colts too
July 16, 2015 at 20:47 #1137710Liked the look of Tasleet at Chepstow yesterday. Low key meeting so might go under the radar a bit, but he comes out of a fair York maiden on debut where he was very green and it is working out well, 2nd, 3rd and 4th have won since now.
Raced a shade keen early yesterday looking like the field just was not going quick enough for him, when he was allowed to stretch on in the latter stages he come clear comfortably and looked a good deal better than the bare result. Plenty of ability, looks pretty speedy overall by Showcasing, dam was by Cadeaux Genereux and was a half sister to Barry Hills decent filly Etlaala who won the Champagne Stakes and a couple of listed races as a 4yo as well as placing in the July Cup as a 3yo.
I will make him a very very early shout for the Commonwealth Cup
Tasleet runs at Newbury tomorrow in the Rose Bowl Stakes and is generally second favourite behind Opal Tiara. There is a bit of variation in the odds across the boards and a potential for flip-flopping favourites.
Opal Tiara ran at the higher level last time and although only 7th it looks to me that she was probably drawn on the wrong side in a huge field that day and the extra furlong here would seem likely to suit.
Tasleet won easily last time but it looked a bad race to me and 50/1 and 66/1 shots filled the places. He can obviously build on that but needs to and I far prefer the Opal Tiara form.
9/4 Opal Tiara in a couple of places looks a bit big to me. Ladbrokes go only 6/4 and I think SP should ne nearer that figure unless there is confidence behind Tasleet in the morning.
Opal Tiara 9/4 suggested.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 16, 2015 at 21:45 #1137723Taking on Heroic Heart tomorrow in the 6.15 at Newmarket with the Godolphin newcomer
Bint Al Reem currently 4/1 ridden by W.Buick, every chance that price
will look pretty good if she turns out well in the paddock and Charlie Appleby won this
race last year with a newcomer. To quote Ginge ‘she looks the value in this race’Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 17, 2015 at 12:40 #1138281Mark Johnston has had countless 2yo winners this season and has a yard full of them.
So I wonder if it’s significant that we have a huge pot of money up for grabs in the Super Sprint at Newbury on Saturday and he has only declared 1 runner, Hawatif, who won easily at Carlisle last time.
Contrast this with the other major 2yo yard, the Hannons……they have 6 declared
I assume Johnston wants to win the money, so does he know that his runner is far better than anything else in his yard over the 5F trip ?……in which case he must be pretty damn good

That was a funny old race. The money talked for Tasleet and Opal Tiara was ominously weak. The Windsor Castle 7th did little to enhance the form of that race, never looking likely to win. She ran like a crab today to be honest, her action looked ill at ease, always looking like she was grabbing for the ground, rather than floating along.
Tasleet didn’t look likely at one stage and I thought he stayed on rather than the commentator’s claim that he quickened to win it. Looked like another furlong wouldn’t go amiss and he’s going the right way but a good bit more needed yet I think.
As for the Windsor Castle Stakes, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th have all been beaten since then, making Washington DC look a bit less exciting than perhaps thought at the time.
I was hoping for something a bit more exciting to emerge from that but it was all a bit of a heap really.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 17, 2015 at 16:16 #1138417Taking on Heroic Heart tomorrow in the 6.15 at Newmarket with the Godolphin newcomer

will look pretty good if she turns out well in the paddock and Charlie Appleby won this
race last year with a newcomer. To quote Ginge ‘she looks the value in this race’Bint Al Reem is the favourite now Jac. The 4/1 is long gone, so well done on that front. The winning of it is usually the more tricky part though. On the plus side, I reckon that first time out is the best time to catch these Godolphin 2yos.
Luca Cumani has a 650,000 Guineas newcomer in there and that’s an expensive purchase for his stable. The Galileo filly doesn’t seem at all fancied tonight at 12/1 though and is one of those who will probably take in two or three maidens this year before heading into a 3yo career along the lines of fillies like Pamona and Lady Of Dubai this year.
Stoutie has one in there as well and had a promising looking one run yesterday when not beaten far in second by a Hannon runner who had the benefit of a run already. That filly is called Honorina and she is a daughter of Sea The Stars, owned by Qatar Racing. The filly running tonight is called Triathlon and she doesn’t seem fancied at the moment, despite the Stoute/Abdullah combination.
Notary is a Lawman filly representing Roger Varian and the stable are finally going well after a very quiet start to the season.
Heroic Heart sets the standard but it’s by no means an unassailable level and I would probably side with the Godophin filly with the market speaking for her, but not a backable price now at 13/8.
Good luck
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 17, 2015 at 16:42 #1138431There is an interesting runner at The Curragh tomorrow.
The 3.05 race sees Aidan O’Brien’s Shogun have another go after only managing 7th when hot favourite on his debut. He seemed well short of pace that day and they have stuck the blinkers on this time.
The most fascinating one for me is Clear Skies, who is by Sea The Stars out of Out West, who was the Dam of Derby winner Motivator. Clear Skies cost half a million guineas and is owned by J P McManus. It would be hoped that the David Wachman trained filly doesn’t need to go over the sticks to earn JP some of her purchase price.
It is interesting that she tackles colts first time out and she holds an entry in the Moyglare Stud Stakes.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
