Agreed Nathan Al Dallah looked a nice sort this evening 3rd to Hannon’s Dark Angel filly.
Also keep an eye out for La Rioja short of room early she picked up really well.
JacAl Dallah was out the other day and lost at Brighton over 5f, my thoughts were a stiff 6f or easy 7f for the horse but owners and trainers know best. La Rioja turned out tonight at Newbury and duly bolted up at odds of 11/4 sp…..

July 2, 2015 at 21:00 #1120984Steve nice you are back hope things ok with you mate
What you think of debut by PORT DOUGLAS and future for him wants a 1m now and middle distances next year can’t wait for 1m maidens over the next few months
Hands are sore Darren, I couldn’t find the medication Moehat suggested so am trying Ibuprofen gel on my hands but it’s not doing a lot. Someone said to me Voltarol gel was better but it’s a bit pricey.
Port Douglas looked good on his debut, it was a very promising start but like you say he’s probably going to be more likely to go down the Ballysax, Derrinstown, Derby route if good enough next year. Form wise it was disappointing to see runner up Fisherman’s Blues beaten at odds of 1/2 next time out. He was only third that day and sometimes you can forgive them bumping into a smart newcomer is another maiden but with two of them beating him it’s a worry.
Plenty of well bred newcomers still to come out from the O’Brien yard, including some of the most expensive ones, and it’s worth bearing in mind that Found, who ended up ante-post favourite for the Classics going into the winter, didn’t make her debut until the 23rd of August last season.
I think Tuesday’s opener at Gowran was the first two year old race over a mile I have seen this year and it was landed by Jim Bolger’s Turret Rocks from favourite True Solitaire trained by Dermot Weld. Bolger’s daughter of Fastnet Rock, out of a Galileo mare, stayed on really well that evening and the stable seem to have a good bunch of two year olds this season. On the negative side she was ponied to the start and wore a hood on her debut, so I assume she isn’t straight-forward. Jim Bolger later said that she is a bit highly strung but that she is smart and could “go anywhere” being from the family of Goldikova. Bolger also said she wouldn’t want soft ground.
Beating a well fancied colt on debut is no mean feat for a filly and it will be interesting to see where she goes next, as will be the case for Port Douglas and some of these other O’Brien inmates. Other than Buratino I am not seeing much emerging yet from the big names this side of the Irish Sea. A few of Hannons have disappointed after early promise and Gosden hasn’t really put a solid marker down from his juvenile arsenal yet.
Good luck through the season Darren.
Thanks
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Nice 2yo race tomorrow where PORT DOUGLAS takes on SANUS PER AQUAM looks nice race on paper
July 8, 2015 at 17:43 #1126736Port Douglas and Sanus Per Aquam are due to clash over 7f at Leopardstown tomorrow evening. It’s a disappointing field of four and the O’Brien colt is a shade of odds on against the Bolger inmate. Timeform give the nod to the latter horse and my own feeling is that Sanus Per Aquam may have won the better maiden of the two, for all that Port Douglas did everything you could ask for.
Timeform manage to give one of my pet hate analyses ie a horse to maintain its unbeaten record, when it has only raced and won once
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 8, 2015 at 21:20 #1126760Sanus Per Aquam’s form got a knife in the heart this evening when the runner up to him, Lieutenant General was a well beaten third at Naas this evening at odds of 1/3 Fav.
Accidents will happen indeed!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 8, 2015 at 23:09 #1126777Just started to notice a few useful 2yo’s namely:-
SHALAA (Invincible Spirit) trained by John Gosden.
Completely missed the break in his first run but put all that to rights when running away with Cl.4 Maiden at Newmarket LTO beating Fang (Lawman) and the well thought of Nissar (Dream Ahead). All 3 look worth following this season.
I was at Newmarket last Saturday and Shalaa was extremely impressive in the paddock looking more like a 3yo whereas Nissar looked as though he had some growing to do and might come right a bit later in the season.
So at the moment my 3 to watch out for:-
SHALAA *** – John Gosden
Fang – Brian Meehan
Nissar – Richard HannonGreat to see the 2yo’s develop and Shalaa actually won the race that Peacock won last year, so I think he is the best prospect of the three.
Jac
SHALAA running at Newmarket tomorrow 2.40…up against it as well up in class but at 14/1 definitely worth an each way punt.
Will be there to see him in the paddock and going down so hopeful he will make a good show.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 9, 2015 at 09:48 #1126927<div class=”d4p-bbt-quote-title”>Triptych wrote:</div>

JacI was looking at Shalaa and Sandahl for the July Stakes. They are both big odds and need to improve today but there could be more to come. Some of these are unproven at 6f and their strong form has come in defeat. It’s easy to say a horse should be suited by stepping up in trip but it doesn’t always work out that way.
In the end I thought Sandahl at 20/1 upwards was worth a sporting 50p ew. Mind you I can’t afford that much these days
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Well done Jac. I picked the wrong one of the two I nominated. The race looked ripe for an upset, I couldn’t get enthused about the fancied ones.
I actually went off Sandahl when I saw him in the paddock as he lacked the size and scope of the Gosden horse. Shalaa looks a useful sort who is still a bit green and should make a good type as the year progresses. The Royal Ascot 2yo form isn’t looking great shakes thus far and Frankie still can’t pick horses for toffee and he’ll be forever remembered as the jockey who got off Golden Horn
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 9, 2015 at 14:00 #1126996You did better than me Mr Caution I couldn’t see anything past the first four in the market. Well done Sir.
The winner was pretty impressive 6f looks perfect for him at this stage.

I just had a hunch there might be a shocker. It wasn’t the last one of the day either!

Bolger’s Sanus Per Aquam absolutely slaughtered Port Douglas. Makes the defeat of Lieutenant General last evening look all the more mystifying.
Lumiere made a great start to her career with a runaway win for Mark Johnston today. Both Hannon fillies were poor in the earlier maiden, perhaps a slight concern for Illuminate at shortish odds tomorrow.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 9, 2015 at 17:20 #1127072Lumiere looks decent.

Given her trainer you’d better hope she finishes a 43 length last in the Nell Gwyn…

Presume that’s a dig at Resonant Andrew? See the Big Race Discussion for an explanation of that win.
When I started reading thought you were going to say “finishes last in the Cheveley Park” so she’s not ruined by over-wintering in Dubai.
