actually I also bet the winner, it was a very rare winner for me

Good man Judge, I only mentioned Red Rum was the only one who backed the winner
as it was mentioned in the thread. Hope you did well
April 18, 2017 at 06:12 #1297246I would be very cautious about taking a price for the Gold Cup. It was impressive for sure however, many were saying similar about Native River after the Welsh National and you would be hard pushed to say Our Duke’s performance was much better.
Our Duke’s performance was a bit better. To be fair to the Native River backers, they weren’t far wrong – 3rd beaten less than 3 lengths despite the yard’s cold spell and the ground going against him on the day.
April 18, 2017 at 09:07 #1297251Well it is true that it’s a step up, taking on the sort of horses that he’ll be facing in gold cup compared to what he’s been beating so far. It’s a different level of competition.
But he rather reminds me of denman in that he seems made for the race. Good cruising speed, jumps well, and stays extremely well which is very important. I think there’s clear question marks over the other runners. Might bite is very talented but bit of a headcase. Yorkhill got turned over at odds on the other day. Sizing john from the same stable as Our duke but horses rarely win back to back gold cups.
Also native river had already been beaten a couple of times when he’d been to cheltenham, I’m not convinced it’s his track. Our Duke however strikes as a horse that will relish cheltenham.
April 18, 2017 at 11:06 #1297266Yeah LS3, also worth bearing in mind that Native River drifted alarmingly a fortnight before the race, having bled, and that, along with the fact that all the yards runners were running dreadfully at this time, it really was a great effort from him, and if it had been ran a fortnight later, he would have won easily.
April 18, 2017 at 12:57 #1297283well done Red Rum 77, you must have been counting your winnings a long way from home.
April 18, 2017 at 15:47 #1297296Congrats Red Rum, an unbelievable performance by the novice.
I’d have to agree 12/1 looks appealing. I wouldn’t be hard pushed at all to say Our Duke’s win was better than Native River’s, although not as great a weight carrying performance. But all we have to do is look at the horse who finished under 2 lengths behind NR, Raz Da Maree, who was pulled up in this race. That alone should be a pointer to the chasm in class between the two races.
As others have mentioned, I thought Native River ran very well in the Gold Cup and the fact that he is also 12/1 for next years renewal says a lot. Sometimes you have to take things at face value and Our Duke’s run struck me in the same way that Might Bite’s Feltham run did. Relative to the rest of the market 12/1 looks fair, considering Yorkhill is as low as 6s.
