Always an eagerly anticipated race, as it signals the beginning of the jumps season properly, and certainly one I look forward to…….

It’s not my favourite betting race though, and there’s been a couple of times over the last few years where I haven’t bothered at all.
Can’t see a market formed yet, but I’m sure it won’t be long, though it’s also worth noting that a few of them have alternative arrangements.
Although Coneygree is bound to be popular, the two I really like at this stage are Blaklion & Definitly Red, but even at this stage, I can see me sitting this one out. I’ll probably decide on the day, but absolutely no go before the final decs.
October 30, 2017 at 15:35 #1324158Wouldn’t worry too much about Coneygree, Bobby. As one twitter wag put it after Sue Bradstock’s recent bullish press comment: “Sue Bradstock said, ‘I am delighted to announce that Coneygree is bang on schedule to be withdrawn from the Charlie Hall at the 48 hour stage.'”
October 30, 2017 at 15:45 #1324160Yes Joe. Not much rain forecast so ground will be too firm / Too much rain forecast so ground will be too heavy. *Delete as appropriate.
I used to do OK in this with 5 out of 10 up to Harry Topper in 2013 but drawn a blank since then. I am glad that I am in total agreement with Bobby and will probably side with either Blaklion or Definitly Red. It’s great to see the Jumps back in full swing
October 30, 2017 at 20:05 #1324207I think this is a really open race. Coneygree won’t run, and Cue Card would want a bog and if last year is anything to go by will need the run.
I thought Sizing Codelco is an interesting contender at a big price, should he run. He has pieces of really smart form from last season – a length behind Top Notch, winning two good races on the bounce at Aintree and Punchestown – and if he ran replicate that level he could be bang there.

Had a quick peak in the Racing Post in the Supermarket this morning and quite sure Tizzard mentioned going for a handicap on the same day. Not 100% sure so maybe someone else can confirm that if they read it more fully.
October 31, 2017 at 00:44 #1324238I just want his mark to go down for The Hennessy Botchy lol
October 31, 2017 at 00:45 #1324239Homer, the pressure is on lol
October 31, 2017 at 00:45 #1324240lol Joe
October 31, 2017 at 09:53 #1324267I really didn’t expect to have a go before final decs, but I thought Definitly Red would be second favourite.
He’s still 10’s, so I’ll go with him, missed the 12’s, but 10’s is still very fair.
October 31, 2017 at 11:25 #1324286I know I’m a coward but I’m half hoping that Cue Card will be retired with a minor leg problem as we’ve lost too many favourites recently and I’m so scared that his luck will run out. NTD always seems to be paddockside for the Charlie Hall. Not the big race itself, but that mare I made a note of the other day[Mis spent? is running in the mares race [at least, I thing it’s her; a few horses with similar names this year. Start of racing proper for us, although, frighteningly it always seems like only five minutes ago we were there. Charlie Hall does throw up some surprises, though; look at Irish Cavalier last year. Can’t wait [however, will have to leave early’ish as the pub next to us is having a he firework display and the dog is terrified of fireworks!]. Not sure if they’re declared [haven’t looked yet] but I did back a couple of the rank outsiders last night.
October 31, 2017 at 12:03 #1324293Old Cue Card won’t have many runs left in him but his age should ensure he goes off a fair bit longer price than he should on form. I’ll stick with him.
October 31, 2017 at 12:20 #1324294I know Cue Card came on for the run this time last year, but presumably Tizzard has every reason to get the horse cranked right up this time around. He isn’t good enough to win a Gold Cup nowadays so might as well get him wired for sound to do a bit of early season pothunting.

Tizz talking of this then ‘after Christmas’ the Ascot Chase (2m 5f) and that the Ryanair will be given consideration.
The horse might well repay them in full for a light season. I hope Tizz sticks to it – he’s a hard man to predict, whatever he says.
October 31, 2017 at 20:45 #1324346I love the flat guys but can’t wait for this on Saturday. Not had the best record in this and keeping my powder dry for now but this race is the touch light for the next 6 months.

Interestingly, Tizzard made the decision to not let him down at all over the summer – they’ve kept him on his work, which is not something they did the previous year. He could be further forward than when getting beaten by Irish Cavalier.
November 1, 2017 at 12:28 #1324417Yes; the race could be his ‘Gold Cup’. It’s the time of year when I wish I knew more about horses and could tell how ‘ready to run’ they are [having once, paddockside, dismissing a horse in the Midlands National as looking like a ‘sorry creature’ that then went on to win it easily!]
November 1, 2017 at 14:45 #1324433Hope cue card wins
Incase he dosent
