If I could I would place a bet on
Swing Bill
.
He has huge experience at Aintree and over those fences, and has a very little weight.I’m a little bit afraid for
Teaforthree
. He ran a tremendous race in the last Gold Cup… but that was the Gold Cup. Has he recovered from that race?
April 3, 2014 at 17:45 #474206Whatever you think of Ginger’s conclusions, his big race write-ups are gold dust for anyone looking for a reasonably detailed overview – not too short, not too long and well-written. With Ginger’s permission, I’ll be republishing on my blog for the 4th year in succession.
Of course Joe.
Value Is EverythingApril 3, 2014 at 19:50 #474230Battle Group’s form figures at this Aintree meeting – 1211
Whilst he is running off a mark 10lbs higher than his highest winning one, how often does course form come up in these big festivals?
Worse 50/1 pokes in the world.

Just tipped him on Twitter

5 from 8 in April, placed in other 3 (one being a half-length second). I see he’s also entered in 3m Hdl on Saturday…probably win both
April 3, 2014 at 21:51 #474262I was at a Preview this week where Brendan Powell senior told us that if it rained too much Battle Group would switch to the Mildmay races.
Value Is EverythingApril 4, 2014 at 08:46 #474318I do hope Paddy Brennan has been able to switch to another horse? Was hoping Buckers Bridge would pull out because he’s another horse that’s bothering me

I think if Goonyella had been an older horse then Buckers Bridge would probably have been pulled out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that younger horses like this (and Home Farm) will get another chance. Promising as he initially was Buckers Bridge has had too many subsequent disappointments and I would be surprised if he gets seriously involved in the finish.
April 4, 2014 at 10:07 #474330It’s just that his run behind On His Own probably wasn’t too bad considering what OHO went on to do and he’s got Papillon and Spot floating around in his pedigree.
April 4, 2014 at 13:23 #474366What is the ground going to be?

Saturday has a lot of rain forcast.
Value Is EverythingApril 4, 2014 at 15:20 #474385Any suggestions looking at EW for 6 places?

Depends what you’re after Patrick.
In my opinion the best each way bet is the favourite Teaforthree.
I really can not see him out of the first 4, let alone 6. It’s almost a free win bet, with the place as a saver. If having just the one bet, that’s the one for me. Expect 10/1 will be available in the morning before shortening to 7/1 or less.If (and it is an "IF") it does not rain too much – then Balthazar King 20/1, improving and jumps well. If it does p!ss down, then Big Shu (goes on anything) is an alternative at a similar price 25/1. I’d have said Rocky Creek, but not convinced Nicholls is in that good-a-form at the moment and he(the horse)’s had ringworm recently.
Or if you’re looking for a 50/1 shot then Mountainous is a big’un, particularly if it rains tomorrow. Or (remembering I gave 119/1 Auroras Encore last year) the one that fits the bill at a massive price is Swing Bill 100/1. Has an excellent record around these fences. Missed the break last time for an amateur, forget that. Can’t quite see him winning, but first 6 is a distinct possibility. Stable in good form too.
Hope that helps Patrick.
Value Is EverythingApril 4, 2014 at 16:20 #474396I really do want Tidal Bay to win this, therefore I am pulling out of tomorrow’s bet. The way things are going, I Know it sounds daft, but I will believe it’s my fault if I back the horse and he doesn’t win

Firstly, nice pun ^^
Odds are tempting but do you think the age of 13 is a concern?
April 4, 2014 at 18:56 #474411Well, here’s my picks. Expect them to go ballsup shortly after 4.15 tomorrow.
Lion Na Bearnai (He did me a favour when he won the Irish National, still comparatively lightly raced for a 12-year-old, looks like he should stay, can show his class here)
Prince De Beauchene (Backed him AntePost the last two years, and would kick myself if I didn’t back him now he’s in it!)
Monbeg Dude (Will get the trip, the new race conditions should suit him, probably better than we think)
Raz De Maree (I did a full trends check last year for the first time in the National, saw Aurora’s Encore met every single one, thought ‘nah, not good enough’. NOT MAKING THAT MISTAKE AGAIN)
BlueSky @pghenn.bsky.social
So don't run, just like the others always do
April 4, 2014 at 19:18 #474415ok so the nearer we have got to the race, and placed my last bet tonight, as all ive had in my head is big shu, must admit im a huge Balthazar king fan, and already on him
all the best everyone

April 4, 2014 at 19:22 #474418Would be nice to see a good result for the punters with Long Run and Tidal Bay fighting out the finish. Hopefully, all the ‘rags’ will finish out the five and the bookmakers will get hammered.
April 4, 2014 at 19:46 #474427Tidal Bay seems on the drift, but I cannot get away from him here. He was my choice when the weights came out and this race should be made for him.
I’ll have half a dozen fun bets… two best value are Rose of the Moon at around 100 on Betfair and Battle Group at 65.
Rose of the Moon has won 3 of his 6 chases, not beating that much, but might have a fair bit of improvement in him. He has some good early hurdles form with the likes of Bobs Worth and Sir Des Champs and obviously has ability.
If Tidal Bay is quirky, Lord knows what you’d call Battle Group. He’s refused to race and downed tools halfway through a race, but he adores Aintree and this time of year. 3 from 5 at the track and 5 from 8 in April/May (placed in other 3), who can forget his two wins within 48 hours at this meeting last year? He’s athletic and looked like he could have gone round again when he won over 25f here last year, by 16 lengths.
Anyway, good luck to all jocks and horses, and punters.
