Listen, you’ve got to have a bet on old Tidal for this, even if you don’t fancy him. You know you’ll be cheering like crazy for him if he’s winding up a charge coming to the elbow, so you might as well have a tenner at 25s.
If he hits the front close home, they’d better have earplugs pushed well in. If they think the crowd noise downed Devon Loch, it will blow Tidal Bay all the way back to the Melling Rd!

Couldn’t have put it better myself Joe……it’s a no brainer
December 31, 2013 at 00:18 #463572Spooky Joe, was actually planning to do that for the very same reason……better go and do it just now before a TRF "charge" sees his price plummet
December 31, 2013 at 01:56 #463576Given that his trainer is very good at patching horses up I might see what price Cappa Beu is now that he’s only 50/50 to run [especially as State of Play always managed to run into a place even when he was an equine cripple for most of the year].
December 31, 2013 at 06:39 #463579Tidal Bay is as great a 12yo (or 13yo come tomorrow) as you’ll ever see on a racetrack, but I’d be worried about him being 100% fit after a 4-month layoff.
I do not want to see Long Run in this race. He’s still a dodgy jumper over ordinary chase fences, I doubt he’ll improve over bigger ones!
December 31, 2013 at 10:28 #463584I find it impossible to have a ante post bet,in the knowledge that Phil Smith may adjust official ratings to fit is own agenda.
December 31, 2013 at 11:38 #463587I could not entertain an ante post bet on this race,if the official ratings are going to be manipulated.

I wouldn’t be too worried about him being aimed at the race and being 4 months off the track, I think it may actually be to his benefit. He came out this season in November (2013), after a 10 month lay off, and won at Wetherby. This was obviously Nicholls plan as he did exactly the same the year previous, where he ran in the same race after after a 7 month break and won that too. If Nicholls can keep him healthy and cherry ripe I think he could be just about the most popular National winner (Red Rum aside).
I agree with you on Long Run, who has been a great favourite of mine over the years. I think the National would be a big mistake, as I had already mentioned on the King George thread. It’s not that I don’t think he would jump the fences, I think he is a better jumper than he is given credit for, and as I have also mentioned in the past I don’t think Sam Waley-Cohen gets the stride right often for Long Run and he has had to be clever at times. I think it’s to his credit that he has never fallen and although he has a marvelous record, I think he would have achieved more with Barry Geraghty on his back.
That’s just my opinion and unfortunately we will never know, I don’t think it would matter now who rides him as I think that the spark has definitely gone. He looked spent at the end of the King George, pretty much as he did in the Betfair. He struggled to get over the last in the KG, and although SWC was dislodged he still stayed on his feet. I mentioned after the KG that I thought Robert Waley-Cohen should do the right thing by the horse and let him retire to perhaps hunting or eventing of some nature just to keep him occupied. I think in Long Run’s case it was just too much too soon at an early age and he is paying for it now. It’s a pity but I still think he was a great horse.
January 2, 2014 at 16:49 #463594I am very interested in Rocky Creek for the Grand National if they go that route with him. I thought he ran a belter in the Hennessey when second to the general favourite for the National now, Triolo D’alene.
Rocky Creek has had only 9 career starts and will be a rare contender with scope for improvement in a race largely full of old cuddies with sentimental followers. You could argue he lacks experience but the fences are nothing like they once were.
If Rocky Creek sticks another win or two under his belt and lines up at Aintree with the P Nicholls name beside him it is not hard to see a fair bit of money being fired in his direction. I’ll stick a few quid on at 25/1 in the knowledge that he’ll more than likely be a single figure price by the time the tapes go up.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 2, 2014 at 16:59 #463595Not sure of his intended targets but
Mendip Express
ran a cracker off top weight at Cheltenham when winning last time out. Can only find him priced up at 50/1 with Stan James. Wouldn’t be the worst shout if he turns up.
January 2, 2014 at 18:17 #463605I listened to that race on the radio and thought the same thing although I’d reckon he could do with another year perhaps.

He’s 8. Gonna be high 140’s at least. I’d say now is the time unless they " put him away " for a season and hide his mark.
January 2, 2014 at 19:18 #463612Surely needs more experience for a National though. Don’t think he’ll’ve got that pointing. Would love to know what the plans are for him, though.
January 2, 2014 at 22:09 #463641I think it’s written in the stars for Tidal Bay ,love the horse so much he’s in both my ten to follow lists ,pity i don’t back him when it matters . I would be adding Triolo D,alene and Soll i think at this point . Would love to see Always Waining given a final shot if the sun is shining and it’s fast . Just a pity his day of glory was taken away from him in "11 by Phil Smith
January 2, 2014 at 22:16 #463643Mendip Express does seem to be in the betting for the 4 miler at Cheltenham.
January 5, 2014 at 20:16 #464023I’ve backed 2 so far, last years 5th Rare Bob at 50s and 40s and taken a chance that Henderson can work the magic on Shakalakaboomboom at 66s
January 5, 2014 at 20:21 #464025Anyone who wants an absolute Natural for the Grand National should take the 50/1 Bet 365 offered me about
First Lieutenant
,he’d float round.
