presume he’s ready to prep, this is what I read

ONE of Australia’s most decorated and loved racehorses was among the first to test out Werribee Racing Club’s newly-laid turf last week as the club prepares for the first arrival of international horses to its quarantine centre.

Former Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and other horses from the Lloyd Williams stable, including talented up-and-comer Linton, new import Mourayan and Irish St Leger winner Alandi, gave the surface its first real test since being installed – and the feedback was glowing.

Trainer Rob Hickmott, who brought Williams’s horses to the Werribee track, gave the turf the tick of approval, as did jockey Nick Hall and several track riders, who said the track was in great shape and stood up well after several showers in the three days preceding the workout.

The overseas horses that have nominated for Spring Carnival races, including the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup, will come to the Werribee International Horse Centre when they arrive in Australia.

Some of those include previous Melbourne Cup runners Bauer and Purple Moon, and early favourite Jaguar Mail (Japan).

Lloyd Williams was mentioning this one a few days ago:-

Imposing to miss Ebor after being sold
    By Racingpost.com staff 12:27PM 10 AUG 2010

IMPOSING, who had been a best-priced 10-1 for the Totesport Ebor, will miss the Heritage Handicap at York on August 18.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute said on Tuesday: "He has been sold to Australia and has entered quarantine."

After starting his season with a victory at the Knavesmire in May, Imposing, who raced in the purple silks of Derrick Smith, finished a narrow second to Cill Rialaig in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot.

He then started 3-1 favourite for the John Smith’s Cup back at York, but could finish only sixth under Ryan Moore.

Despite that defeat, Imposing remained a strong fancy for the Ebor and was as short as 8-1 to give Stoute his first win in the race since Clerkenwell’s success in 1996.

A crack at the Emirates Melbourne Cup, for which he is a 33-1 shot with British bookmakers, on November 2 could be on the cards for the son of Danehill Dancer.

Isn’t qualified for the Melbourne Cup. Ain’t qualified for the Caulfield Cup either, but I haven’t checked whether he’s entered for that.

    12May10 York ( 10 Gd ,RPR105 )

He had a fracture after last year’s Craven meeting and he’d been off a long tme, but he’d done plenty of work and he’s not a big robust horse. He was fit enough, but I thought he might be a bit ringrusty. – Sir Michael Stoute, trainer

Cummings takes cold comfort in cup campaign
    Date: August 11 2010
    Andrew Eddy

    CARNIVAL KNOWLEDGE

WHEN most people lay eyes on Bart Cummings this spring carnival, it will be at one of the big meets when it all seems so easy. Just saddle the horse, conduct a few interviews, shake a few hands and collect the spoils. But like all successful horse players, he does pay his dues, as he did at Caulfield yesterday morning.

Recovering from a severe bout of pneumonia that put him in hospital for three weeks in April, Cummings, 82, has only been permitted to attend trackwork for a few weeks, but he found no favours from the weather on his trip from Sydney to watch four of his Melbourne Cup horses gallop on the course proper.

Dressed for battle in a woollen coat, Cummings braved the bitter cold and occasional icy showers as he stood in the uncovered mounting yard to watch the four horses flash by as they completed their work.

It can be miserable work, but never one to miss the chance of using a course proper for a fast gallop, Cummings eagerly watched his charges surge through the slow conditions in what will be a final practice match of sorts before the real stuff.

When they were done, Cummings diligently noted the time, spoke with the riders and Melbourne foreman Reg Fleming and then figured that it wasn’t such a bad morning after all.

"They all went pretty well considering the track condition," he said while explaining that the trip from Flemington had been worthwhile. "It’s still early days, but they’re coming on."

Cummings nominated 10 horses in his quest for a 13th victory in the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup. All will have been to the races by the end of the month, including Cox Plate winner So You Think, who is expected to return on Saturday in the Liston Stakes at Caulfield.

Cummings said the four-year-old was carrying a little condition, but would run if the track was no worse than slow. "He works better than he looks, so I’m quite happy," he said.

The trainer was either a hard marker or being cagey, as So You Think presented superbly. A little rangy as a three-year-old, he’s turned into a mighty specimen. The way he stamps his feet when he walks is all part of his make-up. "He knows he’s pretty good," jockey Steven Arnold said.

But Cummings was careful not to get too excited about So You Think’s Melbourne Cup chances despite his respect for the horse. "There’s a long way to go before we have to worry about that. We’ll go the Yalumba Stakes then Cox Plate and if we’re happy we can go to the Cup from there," he said.

Cummings has the favourite, Faint Perfume, for the Melbourne Cup. "She’s a couple of weeks away. Probably the Memsie [Stakes on August 28], but I like the way she’s come back in."
    CUMMINGS’S 10 MELBOURNE CUP HOPES

    1. BRIGHTNIGHT (Melbourne Cup odds, $61): Given the task of partnering the huge gelding Moatize in his work at Caulfield yesterday and was in a lather of sweat on his return so he clearly put in. "He ran fifth in the Queensland Derby and he’s improved since then. He’s a promising stayer," Cummings said of the Savabeel four-year-old. Might be 12 months away.

    2. DARIANA ($14 equal second favourite): Got through the wet going better than her workmate So You Think yesterday and looks ready to resume in the next few weeks. Looks a very strong four-year-old mare and carries some residual fitness from her last start in June in Brisbane when she thrashed the colts in the Queensland Derby. Cummings has won Cups with horses with lesser credentials.

    3. EMPIRES CHOICE ($101): Cummings has continued to try this seven-year-old Redoute’s Choice entire despite his numerous injuries since his impressive Queensland Derby win in 2007. Has had just three runs since and none since the 2009 Stradbroke Handicap.

    4. FAINT PERFUME ($12 favourite): VRC Oaks winner and runner-up in the AJC Oaks. Most stable followers have hitched their wagons to this mare in the cups this year. Was clearly among the best of her age last season when only small and has grown and a little since. "Leilani and Light Fingers were not big, but were still pretty good," Cummings noted.

    5. JOE BLOW ($201): Bred and raced by John Singleton, this horse presents Cummings with his toughest task. A slow, Sadler’s Wells six-year-old he has won just two races and nothing beyond 1800 metres. Will need to have improved 30 lengths over the winter break.

    6. LANDLORD ($81): Promising One Cool Cat four-year-old who’s Queensland Derby tilt last season was abandoned after an eye-catching placing the Grand Prix Stakes. Had only seven starts but will be lightly weighted and must win one of the few suitable exempt races to gain a Melbourne Cup start.

    7. MOATIZE ($51): Has come back in great order and is now a fully matured six-year-old. "He’s big and strong — you can’t get any stronger," Cummings said. "We know he can handle the distance OK." Shown enormous promise since Queensland Derby placing in 2008. Ran second to Bauer in the Geelong Cup and sixth in the Melbourne Cup that spring but was then injured. This is his time.

    8. PRECEDENCE ($31): A year younger than Moatize but fits a similar bill. Showed up when second in VRC St Leger as a three-year-old but has not quite made his mark since. A Zabeel horse who is entered for a return over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Saturday. Has to improve a few lengths but at his physical peak now.

    9. SIRMIONE ($41): At seven, getting on a little, but has won such group 1 races as the Mackinnon Stakes in 2007 and the Australian Cup the following autumn. Has not scored since that day in March, 2008, but has run some great races such as his narrow second in the Australian Cup earlier this year. Does not jump out as an ideal 3200-metre horse but, if he stays sound, he could make the final cut.

    10. SO YOU THINK ($26): A magnificent horse, who is much stronger than he was last spring when he toyed with the best in the Cox Plate. Still at big odds for the Melbourne Cup as there is a query on whether he can stay the trip. Will be given a Cox Plate program this spring but there is something special about this horse. "As a jockey, he’s the sort of horse that you want to ride. He’s magnificent," Steven Arnold said.

After Saturday’s eyecatching performance over 1200m, Leica Larrikin will be aimed at a mile campaign, and bypass the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, going for the Emirates race instead.

    From Sport 927:-

    Setback for Alcopop
    Wed 11 Aug

Last year’s spring revelation Alcopop, scheduled to kick off his cups campaign this Saturday at Morphettville, will be missing from acceptances tomorrow.

Trainer Jake Stephens has been forced to delay South Australia’s most popular galloper’s return after detecting a mucous discharge this morning, according to reports. The cold will prevent the horse from taking his place in the $115,000 Spring Stakes (1200m).

Alcopop burst onto racing’s radar last September, winning the Balaklava Cup (1600m). He then came to Melbourne and scored impressive wins in the JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley and the Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield.

Punters sent him out the $4.80 favourite in the Melbourne Cup, but he finished sixth to Shocking.

A Sydney campaign in the autumn was abruptly halted after Alcopop was twice unplaced in weight-for-age races, Stephens unhappy with the horse’s condition and taking him home to spell in late March.

News about last year’s 19th. There seems to be quite a few horses on the water walker, but I haven’t been keeping track of them:-

    Friday, 13 August 2010
    By Mathew Toogood

Anthony Cummings is hoping a couple of months spent using a water-walker will enhance Zavite’s Melbourne Cup prospects this spring.

The Cup hopeful will begin his campaign in Saturday’s star-studded Liston Stakes at Caulfield, while in Sydney the trainer will produce VRC Oaks prospect Chula Vista and Epsom Handicap-bound Recoup De Fortune.

Tough eight-year-old Zavite hasn’t raced for 16 weeks since the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) but Cummings said that time had been spent trying to strengthen the Auckland Cup winner’s hindquarters.

"I’m really pleased with him, he’s strengthened up nicely," Cummings said.

"He actually didn’t go out of work in the time off, he went to the water-walker and spent eight to 10 weeks there just to build up his hindquarter.

"The last two springs he’s had issues, muscle issues, with his hindquarter and we were looking to overcome that by doing some strengthening work.

"At this point that looks to be working."

    article continues.

Locust invasion threatens major Melbourne events

    * Terry Brown
    * From: Herald Sun
    * August 13, 2010 9:50AM

THE biggest locust plague since 1973 is expected to start within days – sparking a military-style fightback.

The first of the invasion force is due to hatch in South Australia, beginning a hungry progression southeast into Victoria.

In northwest parts of the state, more than a billion eggs a hectare are waiting to hatch, the first expected out of the ground around AFL Grand Final day.

And the Department of Primary Industry believes major events here could be hit, particularly if early-hatching NSW swarms ride northwesterly airstreams down.

"I know they have looked at the major events that occur during that period and made a list," Victoria’s Plague Locust Commissioner Gordon Berg said yesterday.

"They have identified major events that potentially could be affected. There is a potential, but the probability is harder to estimate."

Premier John Brumby has warned that without an effective attack on young, flightless locusts, the Melbourne Cup Carnival could be at risk.

The Victoria Racing Club has discussed the potential.

"The VRC is also in consultation with a leading agronomist to ensure the necessary contingency plans are in place in the unlikely event of a plague reaching metropolitan Melbourne," chief executive Dale Monteith said last night.

"Therefore, we are confident that the Melbourne Cup Carnival is under no threat . . ."

Weather conditions are near perfect for hatchlings. Usually four out of five locusts perish; this year four out of five are expected to survive.

Predictions of a warmer than usual spring have also seen predicted hatching times brought forward.

"This sort of widespread infestation has only happened once or twice that we’re aware of," Mr Berg said. "In 1973-74 . . . and before that was 1934-35".

Over spring and summer, major locust activity is expected south of Hamilton, east of Shepparton and to within about 40km of Melbourne.

Unchecked, the locusts could cause $2 billion in crop damage and about 2.4 million hectares is thought to require spraying. The State Government, through rebates on pesticides, spraying and surveillance operations, has pumped $43.5 million into the fightback.

At the peak of the threat, locust incident control centres will operate in Bendigo, Horsham, Mildura, Swan Hill and Tatura, with a rolling strike force of 400.

Planes and helicopters will be used to chart the swarms’ progress and to spray locusts on Crown land and big farms.

Swarms grounded flights in northern Victoria this year, stripped sporting grounds and caused race meetings to be cancelled.

The 1973-74 plague disrupted flights at Tullamarine, spread across the whole of the state and even out into Bass Strait. Locusts washed up on Tasmanian beaches.

Just letting my fellow Poms know what’s happening in the morning:-

Big race, the last ever running of the JJ Liston Stakes, G2 1400m, will be at 6.20am BST at Caulfield. Full field is
    Shocking
    Zavite
    Heart of Dreams
    C’Est La Guerre
    Vigor
    Predatory Pricer
    Mourayan
    Sterling Prince
    Apprehend
    So You Think
    Shoot Out
    Monaco Consul
    Carrara
    Shamoline Warrior
    Tollesprit

If they were all fit and in form, they would make up 10 of this year’s 24 runner Melbourne Cup field! The weird thing about this is that the winner of the JJ Liston has a very poor record in the Melbourne Cup.

    The dream scenario of

    Shoot Out

    and

    Rebel Raider

running on alternate Saturdays, so that there would always be something to look forward to, is already shot to pieces. Rebel Raider is doing so well that his trainer has felt compelled to run him this weekend instead, in the

    7.30 am BST at Morphettville, 1200m, G3.

Seems rather a poor training performance imo, bringing a horse to a peak too early.

On the Gerald funding issue, it would be quite nice if Squamosa pissed the 6.40am at Rosehill.

Shoot Out and Rebel Raider (and Squamosa) won. Rebel Raider was 12/1, but I didn’t have any pennies on. Will have to make do with my Caulfield and Melbourne Cups bets.

Rebel Raider was a special win Gerald, something very very nice! If he gets to the Melbourne Cup, he’ll be hard to beat, no matter his lead up form.

Shoot Out, wow! Predatory Pricer was a game 2nd, I liked the runs of Vigor, Monaco Consul, Shocking and Mourayan (shame So You Think was scratched) but the eye catching run from the staying point of view was Zavite.

Ran 5th at 200-1, absolutely powered home late.

Now we have next week to look forward to. I’m working on our federal election, so I won’t get to see it until Sunday – but we’ll have the likes of Raihana, Theseo, Metal Bender, Triple Honour, Brilliant Light, Sniper’s Bullet, Danleigh, Love Conquers All in the Warwick Stakes in Sydney.

Andy, is the Penny Edition on 21st August, as stated on page 26 of this thread, or is it now on 28th August? I’ve come across a couple of contradictory reports.

I’m also confused by whether it will now feature one of Rebel Raider and Alcopop, both, or neither!

Just checked Thoroughbred Racing SA – it is definitely the 28th.

I think that he’ll go straight from the Penny Edition into the Underwood Stakes two weeks later, many horses go from the Memsie (also at 1400m) to the Underwood.

    Not so sure about Alcopop.

Thought Rebel Raider deserved a piccie, so here’s one of him winning the Victoria Derby at 100/1.

    http://www.breednet.com.au/profile/images/rebelraider.jpg

edit: trainer has mentioned the Makybe Diva again, in three weeks time, which makes the Penny Edition in a fortnight a doubtful proposition. Running, moving lodgings, and then running again within the week seems risky to me.

    Mail’s Out:

Andrew Bensley just reported on Racing Retro that Jaguar Mail is no longer coming for the Cup. Connections are more keen to target some races at home.

Been gone for the past week gentlemen, but how good was Moudre first up. Absolutley devastating. Hope everyone else got on the early odds.

I thought Shocking ran a great race first up in the Liston. He’s come from last and ended up about 6th.

For anyone interested in Derby betting, Praecido was fantastic first up in Sydney. I got him at 125-1 for the Golden Rose in a fortnight, but the Derby is definatley his go.

Rebel Raider was stunning by the way Gerald. His half brother Shamoline Warrior evedently didn’t handle the wet track.
