The problem with that Halfway is that Musir is a Northern Hemisphere 4yo, and a Southern Hemisphere 3yo.
It does raise the issue though of whether Derbies should be opened up to Southern Hemisphere horses, but my answer is no. Maybe the Hemisphere allowance is wrong? A SH horse has won the Dubai race yet again. The Northern Hemisphere 3yos are only just getting their season started, whilst the SH ones are almost 4, and far more battle-hardened.
March 28, 2010 at 10:31 #286081Nothing really new here. Just confirming what Bart said a few weeks ago about Precedence taking the handicap route towards the Sydney Cup. Is there still room for him to fit the BMW in? (Need to check the date.) Probably thinks he’s already got a couple for the BMW, anyway.
edit: Good grief. BMW is next Saturday. Doesn’t time fly?
Cups campaign seems a matter of Precedence
CHRIS ROOTS
March 28, 2010BART CUMMINGS’S long-term plan for this year’s Melbourne Cup continues to work perfectly with talented stayer Precedence winning the Listed Manion Cup at Rosehill yesterday.
The Sydney Cup will play a key part in Precedence’s preparation for the race that Cummings has won on 12 occasions, earning him the title Cups King.
”I think he has a very nice weight in the Sydney Cup and if he can run one or two in that he can’t get balloted out of the Melbourne Cup,” Cummings said.
”That is the idea for this preparation and he looks like he will make a nice stayer.”
In a stop-start affair, jockey Luke Nolen took off approaching the turn and hit the front 400 metres out.
Precedence’s strength as a stayer shone through as he held off all challengers. He brought up his hat-trick since being gelded, winning by 1½ lengths from Inkster with The Embassy a neck third.
”He wasn’t explosive as last time but he was very strong,” Nolen said. ”He was meeting strong opposition today and really did a good job.
”The stop-start tempo didn’t suit him but he was able to win. He has still got a couple of rough edges but I’m sure Bart’s polish will rub those off him.”
Precedence will have his next start in the Chairman’s Handicap at Randwick in two weeks before heading into the Sydney Cup, for which he is $4.60 favourite.
”He is much easier to train now than before he was gelded,” Cummings said.
”He is going further and further and just keeps getting better. I think he’s looking for the Sydney Cup distance and he has a very good future.”

Almost four? Not quite Gerald. Given that the majority of Southern Hemisphere breeders aim for a late September/early October foal the end of March is six months short of a fourth birthday. Given the time of year the Dubai Carnival is run I think Sheik Momo should have thought outside the box more and made a specialist race for four year olds instead of the Classic age of three. Give it a new name instead of Derby and create a global precedent. I think a major global 4yo challenge could halt some of the 3yo retirements.
Musir to Hayes? Hmm young David doesn’t seem to have the touch with imports that his late and great father did. I’d like to see the horse stay with the De Kock team with Mike continuing to manage his racing career even if by proxy.
March 28, 2010 at 11:58 #286093I got the Hayes bit wrong, Chiswickian. That is what I originally heard, but have since read it is going to Payne.
In my head, I’m just adding six months, which makes the end of September. 3yos will have run virtually the whole season then, when at this time of the year they have barely started.
edit . . he could call the race the Triumph . . .
March 28, 2010 at 22:15 #286184Yeah, I think Mike de Kock made the mistake of saying it will go to Hayes.
Can’t wait to see the BMW – I’m going to be at Rosehill, it will be a good race. It has lost its lustre in recent years, particularly with no 3yos tackling it. But still, might be a bigger than normal field this year – that’s good.

David Payne in Sydney I gather? Paddy Payne in Melbourne would be a disaster. My mail says he continually races sore animals. Not quite the horseman many hoped and thought. Not that the other option is superb. David Payne horses are a tad inconsistent for mine and he reportedly over gallops. Odd chice, but he was a leading trainer in South Africa before relocating to Oz.
All that said I would have gone for one of the leading guys in Melbourne like Mick Price, Peter Moody, Kavanagh or O’Brien. I’m not a big Freedman fan now that the stable is less of a four man family effort. The team always performed better with all the lads on board for mine.
March 29, 2010 at 13:24 #286269Yes, David Payne in Sydney. Apparently, he already has half-a-dozen or so young ‘uns belonging to the same owner.
I’m not sure that I want to know who the bad trainers are, because if I combined it with the list of supposedly bad jockeys, it would be very difficult to find a horse to have a bet on!
March 29, 2010 at 18:40 #286349I think Hissing Sid is what would be described as a Roughie, if he turned up in the Melbourne Cup field. In Britain he’d be referred to in less polite terms as rag. He was at the fringes of the betting last year, but I don’t know whether he was one of the horses that paid their entry fees all the way through.

Hissing Sid set to strike in Easter Cup
Monday, 29 March 2010
By Mark RyanWarrnambool-trained galloper Hissing Sid will have a second-up crack at the Easter Cup at Caulfield on Saturday following his pleasing effort in the Blamey Stakes earlier this month.
The Golden Snake five-year-old showed he was on track for the Group Three 2000m event when finished fourth to New Zealander Lord Tavistock in the Group Two Blamey (1600m) at Flemington on March 14.
Co-trainer Symon Wilde, who prepares Hissing Sid with his father Bill, said the gelding jarred up quite badly towards the end of his spring campaign.
"He was fully fully checked out at Ballarat (Veterinary Clinic). He had general muscle soreness and it was a time thing so we decided to give him a good spell and miss the autumn," Wilde said.
"His Blamey run surprised us. We thought he would run okay but he went about two lengths better than we thought he would.
"We’ve taken a conservative approach and decided not to run him too much.
"He’s a very clean-winded and light animal and doesn’t require much hard work at all."
"It depends how he goes on Saturday but we have a few options with him. He’s heading towards the Warrnambool Cup again."
Hissing Sid won last year’s Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) before finishing fifth to Phaze Action in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington.
The Warrnambool Cup is on May 6 with the Ramsden on May 15 but Wilde said he was considering taking a small team of horses to Brisbane for a winter campaign including Hissing Sid, Baughurst and Arch Symbol.
Hissing Sid showed his staying ability last spring finishing third to Alcopop in the Group Two Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield and fourth to Kiwi stayer Sterling Prince in the Group Three Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m) at Flemington.
Hissing Sid, who has won six of his 21 starts, scoring at twice at Caulfield and once at Flemington, will again be partnered by Ben Melham who has ridden him at his past two starts.
There are 16 entries for the Easter Cup including last year’s winner Miss Maren, runner-up Raffaello and third placegetter Light Vision.
The Lee Freedman-trained Fanjura, who made a winning Australian debut over 1700m at Caulfield on March 20, was also nominated.
March 30, 2010 at 00:50 #286399Hissing Sid was a final acceptor, but he was one of three horses balloted from the field (the others were Six O’Clock News and Vigor).
Chiswickian, as far as I’m aware, your mail about Paddy Payne is spot on.
April 4, 2010 at 20:53 #287548Just confirming that Daffodil will stay in training instead of going to stud, and that she’ll be aimed at the Melbourne Cup again.
Harris Tweed on track for Sydney Cup
NZPA – April 4, 2010, 1:54 pm
Daffodil will return to New Zealand for a spell while Harris Tweed will press on for the Sydney Cup after their runs for fifth and sixth in the A$2.25m (NZ$2.77m) BMW at Rosehill in Sydney yesterday.Ironically, the two New Zealanders went for the same gap 200m from the finish in the 2400m weight-for-age feature, with Hugh Bowman holding his line on Daffodil, forcing Darren Beadman on Harris Tweed to angle further towards the inside.
Daffodil had struck trouble earlier in the straight, getting held up when Roman Emperor started to tire in front of her, then late in the piece she was denied racing room and was unlucky to miss a minor placing, though there was no doubt that Littorio was a deserving winner on the day.
Trainer Kevin Gray was not thrilled with Bowman’s tactic of taking Daffodil to the rail from barrier five. "By the time she got out the others had their positions for their runs and it took a while to clear them. She got tightened up the last bit and should have finished closer," he told NZPA.
"But I am very proud of her and she has pulled up as if she hasn’t had a run. She has won around $100,000 in her two runs over here (she finished fourth in the Ranvet Stakes over 2000m on March 20)."
Daffodil will return to Waikato Stud on Tuesday and will have a month’s spell before being prepared for a spring campaign, which Gray said would likely take in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.
The mare, who won the AJC Oaks last autumn, won $A70,000 for yesterday’s effort, while Harris Tweed earned $A50,000.
Murray Baker, who trains Harris Tweed in partnership with his son Bjorn, said he was happy with his horse’s performance.
"We were only 2-1/2 lengths from the winner so we weren’t far away. He probably wanted to be out further on the track, but when he tried to push out on Daffodil, Bowman has held his place. I suppose that is good riding."
Beadman told Baker that Harris Tweed was probably looking for a longer trip now.
The horse will run in the $A400,000 Sydney Cup over 3200m at Randwick on April 24. Hong Kong-based Beadman is not available for the ride, and Baker said he was in discussions with jockey Michael Rodd’s agent.
April 4, 2010 at 21:27 #287552Metal Bender seems an unlikely sort for the Melbourne Cup. Would need to qualify at 2350m+ as well.
Oliver on Metal Bender in T J
Brad Waters Friday, 2 April 2010
Champion jockey Damien Oliver will ride dual Group I winner Metal Bender when the gelding returns to racing in Saturday week’s Group I T J Smith Stales (1200m) at Randwick. The Randwick and Rosehill Guineas winner missed the spring after he was found to have cracked a stifle bone while being prepared for the Melbourne Cup.
Metal Bender was transferred to the Chris Waller stable after the death of his previous trainer Jack Denham and he’s had a trial to prepare him for the Group I sprint.
The son of Danasinga was given an easy time when third to Lucky Leak in a trial at Rosehill on March 29.
Metal Bender has won four of his nine starts and more than $800,000 in prizemoney.
April 5, 2010 at 00:49 #287587I actually thought he would have had a massive chance for the Melbourne Cup last year, while he won at 1600m and 2000m he is bred to stay.
And he had no luck whatsoever in the Derby.
April 5, 2010 at 06:14 #287592Maybe I overreacted to seeing Bluebird in the pedigree – I always think 6 furlongs when I see that name.
Anyway Andy, I’ve got one from leftfield for you.

Came across this yesterday, but I couldn’t access the actual article:-
Goldie looks to dazzle at Musselburgh – Herald Scotland | Sport …
12 hours ago – Ever the dreamer, the intrepid trainer is also weighing up an audacious tilt at the Melbourne Cup with Nanton in November. “It’s only an idea at the moment …
http://www.heraldscotland.com/…/goldi … -1.1018193I’m thinking that this was actually written yesterday, as Goldie had Dazzling Light running in the big race of the day, the Musselburgh Gold Cup.
Last year, Nanton ran in the Lincolnshire, came 4th in the Royal Hunt Cup, 4th in the Ebor, won the Mallard, and then went for the Autumn Double, coming 3rd in the Cambridgeshire and 9th in the Cesarewitch.
The Mallard, 1m6.5f, was worth £32,380 to the winner. I haven’t bothered to learn the exchange rate, but I think that falls short of $60,000, so Nanton still needs to pass the first balloting requirement.
Also, I don’t know how rich the owners are. I think the final forfeit for the Melbourne Cup is somewhere in the region of $50,000 , which is a hell of a lot. I’d have thought for Nanton to go over for the Melbourne Cup, he’d have to win that amount of prizemoney in Britain this year first.
April 5, 2010 at 06:58 #287594Then you also have to consider the travelling fees, etc – for some reason the VRC and Racing Victoria don’t pay for horses who stay here.
Seems weird to me.
If you think you will run top 10, it is worth it. Prizemoney for 10th is $110000.

Some UK qualifiers will need Gordon to stop printing new pound notes in order to qualify the way the exchange rate has gone of late.
April 5, 2010 at 11:41 #287650Is there an official racing exchange rate that is set once a year?
