AFB travelled very well until Ryan asked him to pick up and then he just cut out like somebody had just taken the keys out of the ignition – interesting to note beforehand that he had a tongue tie on, which (correct me if I am wrong) was the first time it had been used and with connections also stating a worry about the distance (which I found a strange thing to question) it will be interesting to see what they can come up with as an explanation for today’s run.
On ground officially described as good to soft (good in places) the big tail wind together with plenty of early pace has distortedly helped them run comparably the fastest time of the day (0.91s off standard with the Palace House run 0.99s off standard) whilst the remainder of the races on the card were run between 2s – 5s slower than standard.
Today would have been softer than anything he has raced on barring winning the National St at the Curragh on yielding (the Irish equivalent of good to soft) last year – but being a way superior 2 yr old at that time, did he just get away with running on ground he hated that day (like Gleneagles did in winning his Irish 2000g) but simply got found out on it today against rivals that had both physically/mentally caught up to him as 3 yr olds or based on how the second has run (beaten comfortably in the Dewhurst on good ground) do we now have to question whether the horse has actually trained on?
Alternatively, he could have just had an off day and I am simply reading far too much into his performance today to the extent that he consequently goes through the rest of the season unbeaten over a mile!!!!
April 30, 2016 at 23:01 #1244183Well done to everyone who backed Galileo Gold and for Steve for flagging him up at 40/1 even though he was totally convinced that AFB would win this …hope you had a bet on him Steve and Ribchester your fun bet who came in 3rd at 33/1.
Great to see Paco Boy sire the winner of the 2000 Guineas, one of my favourite racehorses. Great training performance from Hugo Palmer and brilliant ride from Frankie.Buratino never got going on the ground and with that tail wind, as Ginge said earlier, the ground was absolutely dead and nothing was going to come to win the race from behind it was impossible to quicken. Have to see how it is tomorrow.
Bad luck BigG and TAPK (and me) we kept the faith but the weather let us down, he will be a different horse when he can hear his hooves rattle again.
I got on Stormy Antarctic EW at 10-1. Hope he doesn’t make a fool of me.
@Triptych I was on Haafhd in 2004 and I’m grasping for faith in the Craven right now!
Looks like the stat on the Craven is still holding up St.Nic.
Stormy Antartic looked full of himself in the paddock even kicking his heels in the air at one point. Just wasn’t good enough on the day.Never seen so many happy Bookmakers leaving the course tonight, let’s make them all sad again tomorrow Jac
I think that sums up BURATINO’s run Jac, it’s disappointing, but nobody died so we can take it
on the chin and get on with it. I’m sure we will get the chance to claw back some of our lost dosh
when the sun decides to shine and the rain is hopefully mainly on the plain in Spain.April 30, 2016 at 23:12 #1244187Clearly there was more to it than the fav not staying, he wouldn’t have won over six furlongs today.
Either there was something seriously amiss or they should come out and say he’s not as good as they thought it was, admit they overhyped it for once
April 30, 2016 at 23:14 #1244188I’m as confused about Air Force Blue as you are LD. Whether he hasn’t trained on, had an off-day or just had some issue of some sort is difficult to say. But, I genuinely hope they don’t pull some PR injury stunt to save his stallion prospects as someone mentioned previously and do instead give him another chance. There were too many incomprehensible performances over the card today to write him off completely yet (see Jack Hobbs and Cymric, who had beaten both Galileo Gold and Massaat last year and was pulled up today after appearing to be travelling like a dream). I also refuse to accept that Marcel, AFB and Stormy Antarctic were the worst three horses in that field. Really think a lot of horses didn’t run to their true value today for whatever reason.
April 30, 2016 at 23:18 #1244190People are fawning over the winner as if he was that obvious but I wouldn’t have backed him with stolen money before the race. never rated the horse.
It’s annoying cus I backed the second before the race but it does hurt you as punter when your judgement is shown up to be so erroneous.
April 30, 2016 at 23:52 #1244194I don’t know what the tail-wind contributed, but GG didn’t look to me to be close to stopping at the end and that after racing prominently from a bad draw.
As with Golden Horn, the breeding boys will have a heavy blue line through GG alreday for Epsom, but I’ll trust my eye rather than the stud book and take a bit of 10s.
April 30, 2016 at 23:55 #1244195Haven’t been following the thread but Kudos to Mr Caution and other supporters of the winner – well done
May 1, 2016 at 00:23 #1244197I like Galileo Gold, I think he’s a smashing looking horse.
Good point re Golden Horn @steeplechasing. I admit I was one of the ‘he won’t get 12f’ brigade; boy did he prove me wrong lol.
May 1, 2016 at 08:15 #1244220Just reflecting that the racing post trophy,Dewhurst and Craven winners were the last 3 to finish in the guineas. Very strange that should be the case and it may well be that the form doesn’t stack up. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few who finished down the field reverse the form. Time will tell.
May 1, 2016 at 09:40 #1244227There were plenty of surprises throughout the Newmarket card yesterday, not to mention a few reputations that require a dose of TLC!
The Palace House Stakes suggested the ground was consistent. I did notice a few efforts flattening out on the near side between the cutaway and the furlong marker, only for them to run on again once meeting the rising ground. I wouldn’t attribute this to the undulations, rather there were patches of dead ground.
Tom Queally (Zhui Feng) made it quite clear that he preferred to be near the centre of the track when the field initially split, and it was from this isolated group that both Galileo Gold and Ribchester emerged to finish first and third, respectively. They gravitated towards the near side as the race progressed where they joined fellow frame fillers, Massaat and Air Vice Marshal.
It’s difficult to question Galileo Gold. He was a progressive juvenile who finished his campaign at the top table in the Jean-Luc Lagardere. Interesting to note that Galileo Gold, First Selection and Herald The Dawn emulated their efforts in that race to finish in the same sequence yesterday. With regards the Derby, there is every chance that he will stay ten furlongs but I think twelve furlongs will prove beyond him on both breeding and my visual impression. His full sister, Choucmicha, is also in-training with Hugo Palmer.
I haven’t seen Massaat in the flesh, but he looks a big boy who can only get better. The disparity in size between himself and Galileo Gold was quite evident when they crossed he line. He is certainly open to improvement on both a physical and experience scale – more so than the rest of the field – and it wouldn’t surprise me if he finished the year as the best of these. Unlike the first, third and fifth, he was racing near the stands side rail throughout the contest.
Ribchester looked as though improvement was necessary after his DQ second in the Prix Djebel. He won an average renewal of the Mill Reef last season, but he was sent off favourite as a maiden after two placed efforts in as many outings. He still looks a big baby to me – physically and mentally, and is another who can only get better. It wouldn’t surprise me if connections dropped back to seven furlongs and he looks an ideal type for the Jersey Stakes.
Air Vice Marshal ran admirably to finish fourth. Sadly, I don’t think connections have ever held him in the highest regard and Mike de Kock is surely preparing a box for him and outlining a plan for the Dubai Carnival next year!
Buratino did not appear to stay. He came there with every chance but fell away at the two furlong marker. He is perhaps another contender for the Jersey Stakes, although he is well worth another crack at eight furlongs on faster ground during the summer.
I wouldn’t be in a hurry to dismiss Air Force Blue just yet. The vibes coming out of Ballydoyle were strong and if there was any inclination he hadn’t trained on I doubt connections would have been quite so bullish. Ryan Moore never looked comfortable, so I guess any questions regarding ability and stamina will be answered another day…hopefully!
His performance, along with that of Stormy Antarctic (11th) and Marcel (last) dampen the enthusiasm for the overall form slightly. I doubt the respective winners of the Craven, Dewhurst and Racing Post Trophy were the three worst colts in the field. Stormy Antarctic made smooth progress until his run petered out as soon as it got started and I’m sure something will come to light.
Hard to gauge the relevance of rank outsider Kentuckyconnection finishing fifth. This race has a habit of rags outrunning their odds, so it shouldn’t be considered an anomaly. He travelled well and looked comfortable throughout, and had already demonstrated a degree of ability. Well done to connections for taking their chance and picking up £13,000 for being bold.
It was great to see Hugo Palmer continue his rise up the training rank and he’s a thoroughly likeable guy. Likewise, Owen Burrows laying down his marker for the remainder of the campaign after an impressive start. These young trainers, under both codes, certainly know what they have and how to place their horses.
This guy is a machine. All he does is work out and pick winners. Talk about fit. You should see him without his shirt off, serious side of beef.

May 1, 2016 at 23:38 #1244352What a great pic Jac!!
I must admit I am biased!! But I did say about my two trotting into the dip together and had the exacta too!! as well as backing them both.Cream cakes
And some sedatives for the doggies!!
I can’t see the winner getting a mile and a half though!! But that’s for another day.
Brilliant tipping Raymo, sorry I missed that it might have persuaded me to have a little side bet myself, hope the cream cakes went down well
Just posted up some pics of the 3 Coolmore girls going to post before coming in 1,2,3 in the 1000 Guineas (on that Thread), what a great tricast that would have been..Aiden didn’t stop talking and talking on his phone for the rest of the day, bit different to Saturday when he slipped quietly out the back door..
Had a great day today and recoped my losses, I think you might need to put Gaviscon on your shopping list after all those cream cakes you’ve eaten this week..LOL.. JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out... -
