You’re a genius at finding these Bluemanc – that stirred some great memories. Many thanks.

    100% agree.

It not often I see a YouTube clip of a past race here from that era which I haven’t already seen, but this one was new to me.

Sea Pigeon was in front a long time – far too long, by his standards – there, but fortunately he was in a different league to the opposition.

If that was now he’d be a short priced favourite for one of the novice races at Cheltenham.

Back then I’d guess Cheltenham never got a mention at that stage. How times, unfortunately, change.

What a really good point IMO.

Back then, come the autumn, post Flat Turf season, with the November Handicap done and dusted, you’d walk into a betting shop and the standard advert in the racing papers on the wall would have ante post lists for the Champion Hurdle, the Cheltenham Gold Cup and, by January, the Triumph Hurdle.

Now there’s lists online for virtually every race, all priced up to gigantic margins.

If you’re an ante-post and Cheltenham Festival addict, it’s great.

But if you miss the days when the Jumps season was about so much more – including the Panama Cigar Hurdle Series and Final – it’s definitely not so great.

Great find – love seeing my all time favourite racehorse in his early days starting out over hurdles.

Still hanging on to hope that Jonjo gets a even a halfway decent jumper that can carry the colours now that they are being used again.

I miss the days when races had proper names, like the Whitbread Gold Cup, or the Brooke Bond Oxo National, the SGB Chase, or the Massey-Ferguson Gold Cup. The names aren’t as poetic or romantic now.

Skymas was a legend; 2 champion chases (at age 11 + 12!!), a Mackeson, and even 2nd under a big weight in the Irish Grand National, which in those days was 3 mile + 6 furlongs. I also recall him winning the 2-mile handicap under top weight at Aintree on the day of Red Rum’s 3rd National, coming from the clouds having been seemingly outpaced. He also was a regular over hurdles, and the only time I saw him live was at Down Royal, again battling home under top weight. It’s very hard to find any details of his racing career, and I’ve never found any film footage, apart from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntrvEVqTQGA
In those days they used to run their horses, and the festival hadn’t squeezed the life out of jump racing.
