And to continue the thread to test young Matthew’s boredom level, Star Appeal won the Arc at PM odds of 118/1, 1975.
August 20, 2010 at 23:38 #313946I’m lost for words.This isn’t group 1 more like class 7
August 20, 2010 at 23:52 #313947Saw the forum and the references to Hittite Glory.
Very happy memories, the Flying Childers that year was run on 13 September, which also happened to be my 13th birthday. My Dad used to put a small bet on for me on a Saturday and I had 10p on Hittite Glory. A £10 pick up for me in those days was a substantial amount. I still remember vividly how he came from last to first.
He stood at stud in the UK initially (and then Japan) and a few years later I started following his sons on the racecourse, in particular I remember a sprinter called Camisite, who was just below top class and Great Western who won the Derby trial at Epsom for John Dunlop. The one I missed was Saxon Farm winning the Triumph Hurdle.

August 21, 2010 at 07:55 #313965Getting ever-further removed from the title of the thread but Senor El Betrutti won a G2 Novice Chase at 66/1 1n 1995. A 10,000/150 was laid on course.
He also won the ’97 Murphy’s (Paddy Power) Gold Cup at 33/1
The horse second on both occasions was Challenger Du Luc
August 21, 2010 at 07:58 #313967Rebel Raider was 100/1 when winning the Victoria Derby in 2008.
August 21, 2010 at 10:14 #313989Thank you for the link to the Flying Childers Stakes Pinza. I was there that day & my Dad & I thought he was the pick of the paddock, but alas didn’t back him.
I don’t think the Flying Childers was a Group 1 then though.
What about Son of Love in the 1977 St Leger he must have been a long price. What happened to him, I can’t find a stud record? Did he die young?August 21, 2010 at 10:28 #313993

, in fact the Flying Childers was a Group 1 for five years, from 1973 to 1977 inclusive, after which it was downgraded to its current status. A pity, as of course there has (infamously) been no Group 1 2yo only race over the minimum distance since that time, as far as I know – though I’m well open to correction!
August 21, 2010 at 10:35 #313994Hi,
Since 2000 there has been 449 runners of sp 66/1 or greater in group 1’s and only 1 winner-yesterdays.
Summoner returned @ 33/1August 21, 2010 at 11:33 #314000122-1 on the Tote!
I think it’s even more amazing that the 3rd place was the other 100-1 complete outsider. Only SSB seemed to run any sort of race from the fancied horses.
Some genius got the trifecta for a £6311 payout
