Hi all, anybody got any early suggestions for the upcoming Jumps competition, i have 9 at the moment those being, Butler’s Cabin, Denman, Heathcote, Iktitaf, Katchit, Reveilllez, Twist Magic, Voy Por Ustedes and Wichita Lineman, will probably put Kauto in but at present need some assurance.
Cheers for now.
October 28, 2007 at 19:26 #121955Hi Wakeman
I think Reveillez may be out for the season, so you may want to check?
Reckon you have the Ch Hurdler (Iktitaf) but think your list looks a bit weak in the top class staying division. There are loads of points to be earned both here & in Ireland so think you need at least 2, if not 3 in your list
Good luck anyway!
October 28, 2007 at 19:48 #121963Hi Perpetual, thanks for pointing that out for me, if that is the case then will put either Blazing Bailey or Massini’s Maguire or possibly both and take the chance of leaving Kauto out, daft perhaps but he is going to be in at least virtually all entries and rightly so, but if the wheels were to come of then it gives the bold or silly one’s like me
the hope of capitalising, will ponder it for a day or three yet.October 28, 2007 at 20:34 #121987If Drombeag’s in the line up stick him in Wakeman, could be a dark horse for the national and was very game at cheltenham in March.
A fully-exposed hunter – with an as-yet unfixed predilection to belt one – winning one of the weakest Foxhunters Chases in recent memory doesn’t mark Drombeag out as Grand National material to me, I’m afraid.
Naturally JP McManus is entitled to enter a shedload of animals in the race as he pleases, but I’d struggle to fathom what Drombeag offers that Butler’s Cabin, Reveillez and L’Ami to name but three do not.
I’m still thinking about what I’d posit as a likely 2008 National winner at this early stage. Cane Brake appeals to an extent, although a rating of 159 is going to ensure he’d get top or near to top weight, and his Irish National flop reminds us that he is probably as dependent on a soft surface to excel as my main fancy of last season, the subsequently sidelined Ossmoses.
Maybe Hot Weld could prove the answer off a rating still likely to be no higher than the late 140s all being well, granted his habit of coming to hand in the Spring and tendency to keep out of trouble even in big fields by leading or at least racing prominently.

October 28, 2007 at 21:59 #122030Marb,
I can’t blame you for over-sensitivity given previous events on other forums, so I’ll put this as delicately as possible. My response was not a slagging off, and you’d have known about it if it was – there wouldn’t have been any explanation for you as to why Drombeag doesn’t cut it for me as a National candidate.
(I might expand on that matter, incidentally, to say that Drombeag has already had one spill over the National fences, having first tried to run out after the water. Further, prior to the Foxhunters’, every race of his since the 04 NH Chase Challenge Cup had featured at least one mistake or sticky jumps serious enough to warrant an in-running comment).
I am reminded of the disclaimer that appears at the front of every year’s edition of Mackenzie and Harris;
“A book of this nature that made no conclusion would be valueless, one that was invariably correct miraculous”.
That’s pretty much the essence of this forum as well, to be honest – we could all do worse than take that to heart, rather than assume any disagreement constitutes a slagging off.
Further posts awaited with interest.

October 28, 2007 at 22:06 #122031Grand National? I havn’t got over Point Barrow falling at the first fence in this years yet…..
October 28, 2007 at 22:08 #122032I think Money Trix showed tremendous promise before injury. I would like to put him in but not sure about his wellbeing although he is included in Mark Howards "One Jump Ahead"
October 28, 2007 at 22:18 #122035says in my book that he will be back at the end Oct / start Nov to begin novice chasing over 3 miles but only on soft or heavy ground…

That’s great, ta very much for the info, I’m convinced he’s going to be a good ‘un, but if this unseasonal weather keeps up he’ll be lucky to get soft/heavy ground in the winter!
October 29, 2007 at 01:10 #122062Im looking forward to seeing Taranis run. He could be top class this season.
A very athletic bold jumping type. I love em!
October 30, 2007 at 01:53 #122226My five definites this year are-
Katchit- A. King- Can’t help thinking that this is the next Champion Hurdler, so slick at his flights and the heart of a lion.
Kauto Star- P. Nicholls- Had his knockers last season right up until Gold Cup day, special talent, three miles is his minimum now. Machine.
Denman- P. Nicholls- Likely to be kept apart from Kauto Star until the Gold Cup, only horse who can get near to Kauto at Cheltenham.
Voy Por Ustedes- A. King- I still feel this horse hasn’t been given the plaudits deserving of a crack two mile championship chaser. 2m King.
Cork All Star- J. Harrington- Top class bumper horse who is still an unknown quantity over hurdles but debut win was smooth as silk.
My dark horse is Ringaroses- H. Knight- 2 from 2 over hurdles since impressive bumper campaign. When I have an idea about the likely Cheltenham target for this one its worth an ante-post bet. Came across as a classy and progressive animal.
Great Topic.
Good Luck All.
October 30, 2007 at 09:03 #122250I love the ten to follow, especially the jumps version, but I’ve lost count of the number of times the horse everyone thinks will win everything actually wins nothing. This year I think there’s a chance that Sublimity and Denman will dissapoint.
We’re making a syndicate entry on FF like we have done for the last 6 or 7 years, and so far we’ve got around £700 in the pot, but the problem is that you often find yourself up against massive syndicate entries. One of our members did manage a monthly prize last year though, so we live in hope.
I know one thing, if I had won the first prize last year, I’d be tempted to chuck in about £10,000’s worth of entries again this year, because if you’ve got the time to spend on compiling lists there must be a fair chance of picking up the prize again.October 30, 2007 at 10:46 #122275Clopf – If Sublimity fails, he must be the winner of the Champion Hurdle
Really !
November 12, 2007 at 10:05 #124347Morning all, have finally decided on my 10 to follow after severe head scratching since i mentioned it on Oct 28th, so without further ado here are my one’s to avoid
