There is someone in my village who has had a torrid time recently. His wife died and he has been seriously ill. He wanders round the village like a lost soul and we feel really sorry for him ( I’ve known him for a long time). My partner always chats to him about football…he and his wife were great supporters of our local team. But yesterday, just as my partner said hello to him and was going to have the usual football chat he immediately lurched into ‘ we’ve got to stop the boat people’. Now why does someone who has so many other problems to contend with have something like that at the forefront of their mind? TV? Tabloids? We live in a middle class area where there are no hotels with migrants, no HMO’s, virtually no coloured people at all…possibly one lovely Asian family. My partner was so taken aback that he didn’t know what to say, especially as we’ve been so concerned about him he didn’t want to upset him. Why does this man think that boat people are the greatest danger facing this country?
