When I put this to Dr Amar, he insists that the number of sites treating malnutrition has increased from roughly 800 under the American-sustained Republic to 3,000 under the Taliban, with around 1,000 additional staff.
As I listen to him seamlessly dodging questions, taking refuge in statistics and blaming the previous government for today’s failings, I watch him and it hits me: subtract the AK47-toting armed guard, the bare feet and the fact we’re sitting on the carpet, and I could be talking to Was Streeting.
