Greengrass – I did post about him myself (the entry was on 23 Feb on Page 175 I believe) with an argument to be made that Flyingbolt’s weight carrying performances were actually better than Arkle’s – he was certainly far more versatile than his stablemate and had he come along before Arkle, I am pretty certain the handicapper would have re-written the handicap in the same way he did for Arkle.
They should have run him in the 1966 Gold Cup (their trainer was never keen on pitching them against each other) and it would have been a true race for the ages and I am not sure just who would have prevailed out of the two. We may have got the match up the following year (Flyingbolt’s owners were onboard) but injury to both meant neither made it, Arkle being retired after the 1966 King George and Flyingbolt picking up an injury prior to that, which he never really recovered from even though he would continue to race on afterward.
Oh what might have been.
