Dee Thompson with a paddock-watchers angle on Horses to Follow during 2018

Hi – I’m Dee Thompson and for the last 15 years I have worked as a paddock judge, reporting on what the horses look like before they race, their physical make-up and, importantly, their scope for improvement or progression. The appearance of a horse as a very important factor and my experience has shown me that it can provide an edge in identifying horses to follow.

On The Racing Forum I will be reporting on 2 year olds and 3 year old maidens and novices that catch my eye physically.  Highlighting ones to note, ones to follow and some for next time out, also highlighting ones to avoid.

Historically I’ve found strongly built athletic looking 2 year olds often go on to be successful 3 year olds and are worth following.

Highlighting the good looking 3 year old maidens can result in finding winners first time out in handicaps.

With these horses you have no form or very little to go on so these reports can hopefully help give you more information towards finding more winners. Equally important I can spot the weak horses with little room for physical improvement that may be unlikely to win a race as a 2 year old.  I’ve posted similar reports in the past on TRF , with good results.

So far there have been very few 2 year old races so my first list is comprised mainly of 3 year old maidens/novices that should do well in handicaps or stakes races

PROSCHEMA – 3 year old maiden won at Doncaster going soft 1m 2f trained by Tom Dascombe I liked this one physically

AGRENTELLO – 3 year old maiden trained by John Gosden a big strong colt second to Proschema at Doncaster who then ran too keen in his recent race at Newmarket but wasn’t pushed too hard I think he could be winning soon.

NORDIC LIGHTS is a 3 year old Charlie Appleby horse who physically is impressive and the way he won last week should be following up soon

NEW GRADUATE Another 3 year old maiden that really caught my eye  trained by James Tate he ran a promising race finishing second to a Stoute favourite at Thirsk he was a big strong good looking individual who should be winning soon

AYUTTHAYA a very strong good looking 3 year old maiden for Kevin Ryan one to follow

RARE GROOVE  is another 3 year old maiden who physically looks like he may win a handicap soon

DRAGON BEAT trained by Tony Coyle a 2 year old strong looking filly who may go on to win a race, finished 3 rd first time out at Thirsk

STRINGS OF LIFE a beautiful 2 year old filly trained again by Charles Appleby she won at Newmarket was very speedy with a good turn of foot, one definitely to follow

QAZYNA  a big strong 3 year old filly trained by Roger Varian definitely one to follow

QUEEN’S SARGENT  a gelded 3 year old who last time out ran in a maiden trained by Kevin Ryan he won well in heavy ground at Musselburgh a one to note in future handicaps

FIRST CONTACT another Appleby 3 year old gelding a lovely strong horse one to watch closely

MIDSUMMER KNIGHT a 3 year old novice for Karl Burke took a few runs to win his maiden but I like him physically he’s a strong nice looking type that I think will win more races
